I need a simple, inexpensive or free 3D modeling program (Windows 8) to perform the simplest tasks: lathing, extrusion, sweeps and the like. Don’t need high quality rendering or more complicated modeling. Suggestions?

Milkshape 3D, though it's quite old and really just a tool for lowpoly modelling. And there is Gmax (old too) still around somewhere in the internet - 3D Max lil' brother, aimed for game modelling.

But I think all you need is SketchUp. Easy interface, many plugins, public API for them in Python afaik.

Milkshape is shareware, gMax is free and SketchUp has trial period.

There is also Autodesk Inventor Fusion - it was free, but discontinued. But i think it still functional if you can find distributive.

looks like Autodesk 123D is about the same.
