biography
Hasibe is a former actress with a company called Delight, which is sort of like Vivid if you knock it down several pegs and center it mostly in New England. She now escorts and occasionally dances at a Delight-owned club in Boston, where she lives, specializing in stage shows that involve a combination of raqs sharqi and fire-dancing that employs swords, whips, fans, and poi. She does not entirely seem of this world, sometimes.
In Hasibe's world, God is dead. So are all the little gods, and almost all the angels (some of whom foresaw their own demise, and reluctantly interbred with certain powerful human or supernatural families, which is relevant here - Hasibe is the great-grandchild of the result of one such union), and a significant portion of the demons. This leaves the world primarily to the humans, and the were-creatures, and the vampires, and whatever else is running around. Underneath the skin of the normal day-to-day world, there are a lot of power struggles, with an increasingly brutal underworld forming. One market in this underworld involves supernatural surgeries to augment normal humans or other supernaturals. It's a nasty business, sometimes using the much sought-after shards of the powerful beings who have since died or killing people to get them, but it is also an increasingly profitable one. Hasibe participated in it in order to purchase a blood modification (detailed in the powers section), which makes her blood into addictive poison and most importantly allowed her to function without self-medicating. It cost one hundred thousand dollars, which she obviously did not have at the whopping age of seventeen; she began working for Delight in order to pay off that debt, in addition to her student loans. Combined these sound really badass and like the hugest overpowered character is being made ever, but uh, they have hideous consequences. One of Hasibe's relatives (her maternal grandmother's brother) was actually eaten alive by his own abilities because he could literally telepathically hear every person on the planet...as an infant. Hasibe coped by using drugs - uppers, downers, everything - so she could get through school, but even then that wasn't enough. It's impossible to make friends or date when most of the time if someone touches you you're sent into psychic shock. If you aren't careful, you can become catatonic for days at a time. Conceivably she could have learned to control many of these (had her mother not been in the same boat in regards to barely managing to function), but the energy vampirism is actually like, the eating of souls, and unless you are a sociopath or at least severely morally bent, that is impossible to deal with; it applies to the undead, the living, and basically everyone. You have to fight to view people around you as more than their auras, and the temptation to take what sustains them for yourself is always there because it doesn't feel like hurting them, it feels like you get to have them inside you, you get to understand them even as you, you know, do worse than kill them. Getting her powers bound meant Hasibe was able to live a somewhat normal life and have normal (in as much as...Henry Jekyll and Edward Hyde are normal) relationships.
