I was reading this article about gay marraige rights:
http://www.desmoinesregister.com/article/20081209/NEWS/81209018/-1/ENT06(thanks for the link
joedecker )
And it opens a question that I've wondered since before Prop 8 started rolling around. It's the idea of escalation. The current perception is that marraige is between two consenting adults with the debate is that it can or cannot be a same-sex couple.
The argument for same sex marraige is that it is an equal rights issue. I'm fine with this. Gays are being treated as second class because they are being denied a right that straight people have. Fine.
But what about the poly community? Are they second class because marraige is defined as TWO people?
and then (because we are playing devil's advocate) how far does this go? Are we being ageist? Speciesist? Antinepotistic? because we don't want people marrying their underage monkey uncle?
I just wonder - and moreso as I approach my own marraige - what is the purpose of marraige as a legal institution at all - and from that answer - why couldn't any two or more things marry each other?
