I talked to a recruiter today. Apparently, you have an obligation to the military for 8 years, no matter how long your tour is. So should I sign up for a 2 year tour, the stop loss program, or a major mobilization could call me back in for the next 6 years after my tour. Here is part of my story:
I signed up for the army because I wanted to be a helicopter pilot. The recruiter assured me that after boot camp I would be assigned to helicopter school. LIARS!
After my ASVAB test, and when all the recruits were done, each service came in and gave a sales pitch. Your test scores need to be high for the Air Force and the Coast Guard. A little less for the Navy, and even less for the Army. The Marines will take anybody. Fail the test? No problem, the Marines will still take you. A drooling one-eyed retard? No problem. The Marines will take you.
I finished boot camp (boot camp is another story) and they assigned me to "ranger" school. I protested and they laughed at me. I was too tall and heavy to be a pilot. "Pvt. Heustis. You're going to get Green Beret training and like it. Now shut the fuck up and get on the bus."
It was all downhill from there. Every promise they made me, they broke it. No helicopter training, no money for school, no control over which base I got assigned to, or what jobs I got. Plus I got to hang out with stupid people all day and all night. A complete waste of my life.
Again. Why the Army? You haven't signed anything yet have you?
