“How did you even smell Danny?”  Stiles handed over the plate letting his friend refuel after everything with Jackson and the club.

“I don’t know,” Scott spoke around the sandwich in his mouth.  “I just smelled him.  Like I could pinpoint where he was right away.  Even in the club I knew where he was.”

“Like how you can find Allison’s voice?”

“Exactly.”  Scott froze. “Not exactly, I don’t want Danny.”

“You sure?  Cause Coach thinks otherwise and apparently so does your nose.”  Scott glared at Stiles who was grinning from his tree stump.

“I’m sure, he just smells good.”  Stiles nodded.  He grabbed his backpack and headed to the police van.  Scott waited a moment before leaving his friend to handle the locked up Jackson.  He had to pretend everything was normal at school.  “I’m going to check in with Danny.  See if he’s alright and if he knows why Jackson would go after him.”

“Alright, just don’t jump him.”

“Shut up Stiles.”

It wasn’t until after Jackson issued a restraining order against the teens; that Stiles thought about Scott being able to smell Danny could be a problem.  He noticed it in the locker room; Jackson was standing by Danny when Scott caught sight of the two.  The werewolf snarled silently a subsonic growl coming from his chest.  Isaac looked up from his spot on the bench staring at Scott.

“Scott.”  Stiles hissed.  “Calm down.  He’s not going to attack Danny.”  He stepped in front of the werewolf’s line of sight which helped a little bit.  Scott was no longer growling at Jackson.  “Come on, we promised to meet Allison and Lydia in the library.”  Stiles guided his friend out of the locker room, wondering what the hell was going on with him.

Even once he was in the presences of Allison, Scott was still tense and on guard.  The situation got worse when Allison headed off to try to talk to Jackson; she hoped to catch him in the locker room.  Scott followed his girlfriend in case Jackson shifted.  Stiles grabbed the bestiary print outs and showed them to Lydia.  The two worked on translating the Kanima and werewolf sections; Stiles explained how they related to everything that has happened in the last few months.

Scott reappeared in the library walking with Danny.   He had a very familiar dorky grin on his face and Allison was nowhere in sight.  Stiles and Lydia stared at him.

“Oh, this could be a problem.”

“What?  I think they’re cute together.”  Stiles gave his long-time crush a dirty look.  “Unexpected combinations.”  She smiled gently before grabbing the remaining notes.  “I’m going to finish these up; I’ll get them to you later.”

“Yeah you do that.”  Stiles did not watch her leave instead he watched Danny help tutor Scott for the upcoming chemistry midterm.  The werewolf kept close to the other guy, his nose twitching constantly.  Scott jerked his head up and glared at Jackson when the Kanima entered the library.  “Definitely a problem.”

Stiles spent the rest of the school day watching Scott being possessive over Danny.  Every time someone touched the goalie; Stiles had to distract his friend from ripping the person apart.  The jealousy was ten times worse than it had been with Allison and the ADHD teen was not sure what that meant.

During practice Scott had tagged one of the guys hard when they had taken out Danny by accident.  The coach loved the tackle and Danny had fist bumped Scott in the locker room.  Scott was on cloud nine after that.

“Scott?”  Stiles licked his lips debating how to bring it up with his friend.

“Yeah.”

“Has anything changed with Allison and you?”  Scott frowned in confusion.  “I mean you two haven’t been spending as much time together as you use too.”

“With the hunters in school?  Come on Stiles we got some common sense.”  Stiles laughed with his friend.

“I know a certain Alpha who would argue with you.”  Scott punched his friend.  Stiles let the Allison topic dropped and focused on the weird Danny bond.  “Seriously through is there anything new happening with you?  Particular a certain goalie.”  Stiles made sure to wiggle his eyebrows like crazy so his friend would not freak out.

“With Danny, no.”  Scott answered.  “Why?  Did he find out you have a crush on him?”  Scott tried to play it cool, but a growl slipped out when he said crush.  The werewolf dug his claws into his jeans hoping Stiles would not notice.

“Okay, I. Do. Not. Have. A. Crush. On. Danny.”  Stiles made sure to enunciate every word while staring at Scott’s hand.

“Cool, Um why are you asking then?”

“Have you not noticed how strange you’ve been acting all day?  Every time Jackson went near Danny; you’d growl.”

“Jackson’s dangerous.”  Stiles rolled his eyes.

“What about when Greenburg got near him?  If Isaac hadn’t ran inference you would have wolf out and attacked him.”  Stiles lets go of the steering wheel to gesture wildly.  “It’s Greenburg man.”

“Nothing’s wrong Stiles.”  Scott shoved his way out of the stopped Jeep.  He slammed the door and glared at Stiles.  “I do not want Danny, or anything to do with him.”  For a moment, Scott’s eyes turned gold and his fangs showed, then the teen just left to enter the animal clinic leaving a worried friend behind.

Stiles was not surprise to find Derek in his room the next day.  Ever since the alpha had saved Scott he would drop by regular to bug Stiles for information on the bestiary.  The teen just tossed his backpack next to his desk and stared at the werewolf.

“You could try not being a creeper.”  Stiles snapped at Derek.  The alpha werewolf was flicking through the pile of translated notes that Lydia had completed so far; both on the Kanima and werewolf.

“I need to know what you know about the Kanima.”

“It’s all right there.”  Stiles pointed at the pile of papers in Derek’s hand.  The teen claimed his desk chair, arms crossed on top of the back and chin tucked on top of his arms.  Stiles let his eyes slipped close, tired from the late night research going over Lydia’s notes and keeping Scott calm about Danny.  “The bestiary only had four pages about the Kanima.  The stuff is pretty straightforward.  There’s a set of rules they have to follow and they can be controlled by a ‘master’” Stiles continued explaining.  “We’re not sure who the current master is, if Jackson has one.  But someone is going through a lot of trouble of keeping it a secret from Jackson.”

“What” the werewolf demanded, his eyes were reading the handwritten notes.  Stiles opened his eyes to slits to stare at the grouch.

“The video from Jackson’s full moon?”  Stiles waited for Derek to grunt confirming the werewolf knew what he was talking about. “Someone went through a lot of trouble to edit it; and when the edit was restored.  Someone took the only copy from Danny’s car.”

“So someone knows.”  Derek frowned, eyes reading about ways to kill the Kanima.

“Not only knows, they’re most likely the ones playing master to him.  The bestiary mentions it is possible they can control his shift so…”

“They can summon him at any time.”  Derek growled.  His hands crimped the papers.

“Watch the papers!”  Stiles jumped out of his chair, pulling the papers free.  “I haven’t made copies yet.”  The teen hugged the papers close.  The ones about werewolves were still by Derek; the werewolf was not interested in them.

“Can the ownership be shifted?”  Derek grabbed the papers back and began flicking through them.  Stiles shook his head and took them back from the wolf.

“Not according to what we translated.  There is another page of information about the Kanima.”  Stiles stepped back from the annoyed werewolf.  “Lydia’s working on it at the moment.”

“I want that when you’re finished.”  Derek headed for the window, satisfied with what he learned.  At the window sill he paused and looked back to the teen.  “Why are you researching about mating scents?”

“What?”  Stiles yelped.  Derek gestured at the bed, the werewolf papers were spread out with highlight covering certain sections.  “Oh, it’s for Scott.”

“Argent isn’t his mate.”  Derek snapped his nose flaring for a moment.

“Dude, how would you know?”  Stiles flailed for a moment staring at the alpha.

“It would show in his scent.”  Derek sighed when Stiles gave him a confused look.  The werewolf leaned against the window and explained.  “A mate’s scent stays with a werewolf.  They do not forget what their mates smell like, and they can always find said mate.  Had Allison been his mate, he wouldn’t need to find her to calm down.  He would never have been confused about her jacket on his first moon.”  Stiles nodded and gestured for Derek to go on.  The werewolf closed his eyes and focused on breathing.  Stiles wondered what the werewolf was scenting.  “A wolf and their mate would merge their scents.  They would smell like each other even with limited contact.”

“Would it be bad if one of them rejected the whole mate aspect?”  Stiles asked.  Derek glared at the human, his lips pressed tightly together.

“Yes, a wolf loses strength if reject.”  The alpha was done speaking and was on the roof outside Stiles’ window.  He was out of sight when the teen spoke back up.

“Why did that sound ominous?  What are you leaving out?”  He did not expect any answers from the werewolf.  Most likely Derek was already gone.  “I need to talk to Scott.”
