9/11 comes every year

Sep 11, 2008 11:51

7 years ago today, I watched the Pentagon burn from my office window and the people on United Flight 93 died so I could be alive. I love the first responders who showed how good and brave people can be. I love the people who posted pictures of their loved ones because they could not abandon hope. I love the people who pulled tiny bits of other people out of the rubble and the ones who painstakingly identified the bits.

I hate the Patriot Act, Homeland Security, and paramilitary police behind tough-guy shades watching me all the time. I hate every authoritarian elitist using 9/11 as a club to get more and more control of my life and to take away my privacy. I hate the war in Iraq, which was started for spite using 9/11 as an excuse. I hate security theater. I hate that so many people around me have been convinced to be afraid and convinced that the destruction of the American ideal is the only way they can be safe.
