I suppose it is a sign of my geek-atude that I happily spent a good deal of the weekend (with some breaks for volleyball and yard destruction) recreationally programming. Learning Java and having a couple projects to muck about in have made coding fun again in a way that hasn't been true since high school. Something about the CS classes I took ( Read more... )

Jen's learned how to weave and we have purchased said loom; it will ('twill ? har har punny) arrive in a crate sometime this month. Looms come in a number of different formats, such as a jack, counter-marche, counter-balance, and a few others. They differ mainly in how (mechanically) they create the shed. (the separation between the different warp threads for a given line of fabric) A heddle is a frame that surrounds the warp. Every thread in the warp passes through an eyelet attached to one heddle. There are a number of pedals below the loom which are tied up in some fashion (1 : many) to the heddles. As in, pedal 3 could be tied to heddles 4,5, and 8. When pedal 3 is pushed, the threads in those attached heddles move in one direction, and the remaining threads move in the opposite direction, forming the shed. (movement of both sets is what makes this a counter-marche). The weft is thrown through the shed, packed in, and the next treadling step (set of pedals to be pushed) is performed, making the next shed, etc.

My mom was a weaver. I grew up with this stuff.
