Summary: During a rather hectic week, the Scoobies find themselves in detention, much to the delight of Xander.

“You know, someone really needs to have a talk with these vampires, demons, monsters…whatever,” stated Xander, as he propped his head up on his arm which was resting on a library table covered with books about the Zohar and the Grigori.

“What do you mean?” Giles replied as he lifted his head from another book about eternal hell-watchers. They had the equivalent occupation he had but for the other side.

Xander sighed and complained, “Would it be so hard for them to keep their attacks to the weekend? They’re really cramping my style.”

“Yes, and what style is that?”

“Well, you know…” he stuttered as he looked toward Buffy and Willow at a nearby table looking through websites on the same content. Angel-he thinks that’s what Buffy said his name was-had mentioned she had a demonic watcher following her, and Giles insisted that they find out more. If you asked Xander, Angel was probably referring to himself. He didn’t know why since he never met him. He had only seen him across the Bronze dance floor, but he felt an immediate dislike for the guy.

Xander was ripped from his thoughts of Angel when he heard Buffy say, “It’s not like I can call a meeting and order them to keep their hellish antics to themselves except on weekends.”

Xander forced a smile and laugh as he dropped his head back to his book. Feeling thoroughly chastised, he criticized himself for saying anything at all. Buffy was a slayer-it was her job, and he was lucky she let him be involved at all. He knew he hadn’t contributed much in the means of help. Sure, he was there when she tried to rescue Jesse, but the only help he could claim to have given her was a few shoves to close the door on several vampires who were chasing them. In fact, if he were true to himself, he had slowed her down, because she had to worry about pushing him up into the vent before she, herself, could escape.

“I have to do better,” he stated. He had to, or Buffy would continue to never notice that he existed, aside from someone who needs to be saved.

“Yes, yes, you do,” Giles replied, startling Xander who hadn’t realized he had spoken aloud.

With a blush rising in his cheeks, he turned his attention back to the book and began to read.

Xander was startled awake by the bellowing sound of Principal Flutie’s voice. “Miss Summers! Miss Rosenberg! Mr. Harris…and Mr. Giles, I am shocked! What is going on here?”

Xander lifted his head to see Principal Flutie and numerous students, including Cordelia, standing behind him snickering.

Giles stood up from the table, and Xander immediately noticed he had the imprint of a book on his face. They had all fallen asleep. “What time is it?” he wondered.

“Uh, these students were doing research for a project this morning,” explained Giles.

“And, why were you sleeping?”

“We weren’t! No. We were resting our eyes from the strain of looking at all these books. You must do this from time to time or the…”

“Regardless,” Principal Flutie stated with a waving motion of his hand, “these students have missed homeroom and first period. The office has them marked as absent. I’m afraid they were skipping Mr. Giles. Did you bother to check if they had passes?”

Before Giles could reply, Buffy stood and said, “Okay, I wrote the passes, but we really, really needed to work on this project for biology.”

Principal Flutie shook his head and looked completely disappointed. Buffy must have come to the same conclusion, because she averted her gaze to the floor. Being unable to contain himself, Xander stepped forward to include, “It’s not Buffy’s fault. It was my idea!”

“What?” Buffy exclaimed. “No, it wasn’t! I…”

“It doesn’t matter whose idea it was! I’m disappointed in all of you, especially you, Miss Rosenberg,” Principal Flutie reprimanded.

Willow hadn’t lifted her gaze from the floor the entire time. This was the first time she had gotten in trouble by the principal.

“You were supposed to be taking the Pre-SATs this morning, but I think a day in detention would be more fitting. You three may show up Saturday and take the test then.”

“Yes, Principal Flutie,” Xander, Buffy, and Willow said sorrowfully at the same time.

As they headed out of the library toward Detention, Xander heard Cordelia say laughingly, “Did you see that? They’re wearing the same clothes they did yesterday! Gross!”

“I’m sorry, guys,” exclaimed Buffy as they walked down the hall. “I don’t know why I fell asleep. I’m used to staying up all night.”

“It’s been a busy week,” replied Willow with a hint of tears in her eyes. “Vampires, the threat of the apocalypse, witches, grigoris…I’m surprised this hasn’t happened sooner.”

“Yeah, but I shouldn’t be dragging you into this. I don’t want you to have the same reputation that I have…”

“Look, Buff, this is our decision. We know the truth-we know what’s out there, now. We can’t go back to doing nothing. Besides, you’re our friend. We lo…care about you,” Xander stated firmly.

Buffy smiled at Xander, and his air caught in his throat. “Thanks,” she whispered as they reached the door which led to Detention.

“You’re welcome,” he whispered back as he held the door open for them to go in. At that moment, he felt like ten million bucks. For one second, Buffy had noticed him.

“This has to be considered child abuse,” Xander whispered to Willow as he listened to the air conditioning unit whine with nothing but hot air coming out. Sweat dripped from his forehead and he used the back of his hand to wipe it away.

“Mr. Harris,” called the detention supervisor.

“Yes, Mrs. McMullen?”

“Maybe you should move to a different table. I’m sure Willow wouldn’t like to spend another day here with you.”

Immediately, Xander got up to move to the next table where Buffy was seated alone. There were only allowed to be two students at each table.

He sat down and immediately caught a whiff of Buffy’s perfume. The room suddenly seemed even hotter. “Gosh,” he mumbled to himself and groaned.

Buffy gave him a curious glance and went back to their assignment. Xander shook his head before doing the same thing.

A few seconds later, he felt a light tap. He looked over and noticed Buffy sliding him a small piece of paper with her pencil. He immediately lifted his arm so she could slide it next to the paper he was writing on. It said:

“I’m sorry you have to be in here. I promise I’ll make it up to you and Willow.”

Feeling lightheaded from the heat, or perhaps from receiving an actual *note* from Buffy, he replied, “It’s okay. There’s no place I’d rather be than with my two favorite girls.”

When he pushed the note back, Buffy rolled her eyes at him and he smiled.

“Mr. Harris!”

Xander jumped, which caused his leg to brush against Buffy’s as he turned his attention to Mrs. McMullen. “Yes, ma’am?”

“Is there something to be smiling about in here?”

Xander glanced at Buffy, who playfully shoved her leg against his to move it out of her space, and answered, “Yes, there definitely is.”

“What?”

“Uh, I mean, no…uh, it’s just I’m almost through with my assignment.”

“Oh, then here’s another one.”

Xander groaned as Mrs. McMullen dropped another sheet in front of him. He wasn’t close to completing his assignment at all, but the smile on Buffy’s face made it worth it. He forced a stern look on his face to show her his displeasure at her merriment at his predicament and pushed at her leg again.

With the look Buffy gave him, he knew it meant war.

From that point forward, the day seemed to fly by. Every few minutes, Buffy and he would find a new way to subtly annoy one another. It ranged from shoving each others legs and feet to shooting bits of paper at one another’s faces. The day had proven to be one of the best he’s had this year. As the bell rang, he was almost sad to see it end.

He propped his head up on his arm as he turned to Buffy and whispered, not wanting Mrs. McMullen to hear, “Thanks for the great day.”

Buffy looked at him quizzically and asked, “What?”

Xander smiled as he noticed the teacher leaving the room and Buffy leaning toward him. “Thanks for the great day,” he repeated, and feeling suddenly bold, he wrapped his other hand around her neck and pulled her to him to meet her lips in a soft kiss.

Xander couldn’t believe it! He actually got up the nerve to kiss Buffy! Just as he was about to deepen the chaste kiss, he felt her pulling away. When he opened his eyes to gauge her reaction, he gasped.

Willow stood there shocked with her mouth gaped open but slightly blushing.

Xander immediately pulled his hand from her neck as if she were a snake. “What?” he questioned, not knowing what was going on. He looked around and realized he was in the library. He looked down and saw the book he had been reading the night before.

Suddenly, he heard laughter and saw Buffy laughing and Giles had a smile on his face.

Willow cleared her throat and said, “It’s late. Time to go home so we won’t be too tired for school tomorrow.”

“It was a dream?” he questioned, looking at Buffy.

“Apparently,” Giles answered. “So, tell us. Just who were you dreaming about.”

Xander looked from Buffy to Willow to his book. “I don’t remember,” he muttered.

“Must have been some dream,” Buffy replied with a smile. “I thought I was going to have to get involved. You looked like you were about to eat poor Willow.”

He immediately looked at his best friend who was almost the same shade as her hair. “I’m sorry. I didn’t…”

“No need to explain,” said Willow. “Uh, I shouldn’t have leaned so close to you while you were dreaming. I just didn’t want to scare you as I was waking you up.”

Xander nodded and looked at Buffy. “Are you sure you want to leave now?” He looked at his watch. It was past well past midnight. “We could stay a few more hours.”

“No, we don’t want to risk falling asleep here,” she responded. “Besides, Principal Flutie would go nuts if he found us, and I, for one, don’t want to spend my Thursday in Detention.”

Xander nodded while thinking, “I think I would have liked it.”

THE END!
