Solitary Confinement

Was watching the "shawshank redemption" last night. Its based in a brutal prison called Shawshank for the most part.

Brutality of physical and sexual violence falls into an age old framework of victim and perpetrator.

The extraordinary thing about Shawshank, and later I learnt about present day prisons (atleast in the US), is solitary confinement.

Sensory isolation. No sight or sounds from outside your cell. That is at once fascinating and frightening.

Fascinating because here all falls away except you and your mind (if there is indeed a duality) and you can imagine investigating that duality completely.
In fact Sri Aurbindo claims having faced and overcome his "mind's weakness" in such a setting.

Frightening for more obvious reasons because people in such situations have to face the unbearable thoughts of being overcome by insanity.
And in most cases to varying degrees are overcome. (See the first link)
