Maelstrom 2 - after-action report.

Jun 07, 2010 12:13

I'm back on 4 Maelstrom events this year - or at least I'm booked for 4. Part of this is that I enjoyed last year more than the previous couple, part of this was 'a cunning plan' I put together over the winter. Whichever way, it was justified this weekend.

My post-Maelstrom LJ reports for the last few years have been very 'samey' - thanks to a ( Read more... )

Wow the same character for six years that is quite a feat...or is that just me?:) Anywho, glad you had 'win'

I do have a secondary who's appeared occasionally - but really very occasionally. He's primarily there for player events where it would make no sense for my primary character to appear.

I'd think there are quite a few blah.1 characters around - and I'd bet that some haven't missed an event. Mine's been close the death a good few times - but until I found a way to liven up the game was in far more danger of being retired.

Yeah I think its hard both ways, hard keeping an active character alive (again, I imagine this to be the case :) and equally hard to sustain interest in a more passive character. It just struck me that six years with the same toon seemed like a long time and yet the 'seasons' seem to pass quickly.

I've been to both extremes with characters. One LT character lasted seven years (less one event), this one now in his seventh season, one who lasted right through Omega, except for the final event which I missed - down to characters who I intended to be long term characters who lasted for less than one year ( ... )

Yeah I can see that now in what surely must be a late stage of this version of Maelstrom that it would be hard to work up enthusiasm for a new char after playing such a long running character as the Doc, who alas (or perhaps for the good:) I've only ever encountered ic in passing. When the game wraps I do hope you put up his bg and stuff what he did so peeps can have a read.

I'm not so sure about that - I think the stage of the game means different character concepts, for sure. But I suspect there are interesting ideas that are only possible at this stage of the game, or at least a greater potential for ideas not designed to have a long arc?

True enough - but although I've played quite a few short-duration characters, I'm not sure I want to plan to do so.

Well you know your onions:) I 'spose it will be quite liberating and exciting for people creating new chars knowing there is only a limited life span, probably make people do more and quickly, (if that floats their boats of course)rather than planning for a long game. Yes now you mention it I think it does open up a whole new spectrum of character ideas.

One person's limited is another's OAP, of course.

But I can imagine folk being inspired by the fact that the "get up the tech tree fastest" game must be getting harder to enter - and making characters designed to do amazing things with basic or close-to basic skills even when that's not their first thought of what's great in LRP. I think that, as you say, might be quite liberating, and maybe even reveal different kinds of fun they might not previously have thought were for them.

Or something.

I broadly support this man.

Since losing my first Primary, I have been concentrating on concepts that don't require tech-tree elevation.

Though I did have an idea for a Prospector character and learned the pre-reqs and then learned that I had multiple DTs of self-study before I could even start the concept I had, so I ditched the idea.
