the discovery channel and animal planet are pieces of shit. yes, they have dope shows that portray the wonder of nature and beauty of animals, but fuck that for the time being. the nature shown in the discovery channel is shown in a way that is disconnected from our world of interaction, where we can sit and watch a far away world that appears pristine and exotic, all seen from the safety of our tvs.
i was watching the series "planet earth" and every segment presented 2 conflicts for the animals: finding food, avoiding predator. there was always the 'predator chasing prey' aspect that they focused on, where they get you to feel sympathetic for nature running its course. if they want to elicit real sympathy, why dont they show why most of the snow leapords are extinct, instead of just mentioning it in a line of narration? we never see the other major conflicts that affects the animals far heavier: human intervention. the conflict is always animal vs. animal. man is absent from disturbing nature on the discovery channel, save the occassional ambigious lines of "this animal is endangered due to hunting and logging."
the corporate interests responsible for these atrocities are not mentioned, but rather they are advertised. every advirtisement was from major corporations that destroyed nature in one way or another, such as a GE advirtisement for its wind power. what about all the pollution caused by GE? this is a BIG ASS corporation, eagerly expanding the terrors and profits of globalisation. they are an instrument of imperialism. you think they give a fuck? they dont give a fuck about you or the earth. all these dirty corporations try to market themselves as "eco-friendly" when in fact they fuck shit up. and discovery channel serves as the facillitator of this nonsense. its a bunch of bullshit. and animal planet has all these fucking shows based on helping abused animals and saving baby seals and shit like that, but then youre not addressing the root of the problem which is the system that displaced them or exploited their habitats to the point of extinction. fighting the causes of deforestation (such as the corporations you advertise) would save far more animals than that asshole holding a seal.
so sure, go ahead and get pissed because some puppy got abused in america while youre wearing a jacket made of domestic dog fur imported far too cheaply from china (i really have one of these). in a way i forgive you discovery channel, because i know you have to satisfy the interests of these corporations, so you would never upset people enough by showing them truths that might really cause one to take action. if they still wanna be an "activist", just give them a nice nature organization to join and plant some seeds.
