Admiral Jack Aubrey and his particular friend, Dr. Stephen Maturin decided to play their favorite piece before they had their toasted cheese.
Stephen was tuning his ‘cello when he asked quietly, “Were you ever mortally afraid, Jack?”
Jack looked up from rosining his bow and said, “An odd question brother. Why do you ask?”
“Merely idle curiosity,” Stephen said as he continued to tune his instrument.
“I was once, yes.” Jack replied.
"Which battle or engagement?" Stephen said as he looked up at Jack.
“Not in battle, nor when boarding any ship. There is no time for fear when one is leading men.”
“ Of course. But when?”
“ Port Mahon,” Jack replied simply.
Stephen lowered his head and strummed his ‘cello.
“I thought I would never find you. And when I did, I though you would never return to yourself. I was afraid of life without you,” Jack said softly
Stephen gently drew his bow across the strings several times but said nothing.
“Was you ever mortally afeared?” Jack asked.
Stephen stopped bowing and replied. “Never. For I have you watching over me.”
