Matt rode up the small hill and stopped. He looked down on the ranch below. His ranch.
Funny how he had taken to the life. He thought he would never be happy away from the busy hum of the city.
But during the last few years that he was the Marshal he had begun to grow restless. WHen he shot that final time, he had had enough.
Things had changed. Doc had died suddenly a few years back. Kitty seemed different, more distant.
And the people of Dodge had changed. They all seemed meaner and less friendly.
About two years ago, Matt had put in his resignation, taken his savings and bought the small spread in Wright, a city about ten miles outside of Dodge.
He had figured that Kitty would now feel free to marry one of the wealthy oilmen or ranchers that had for so many years courted her.
Chester, he had figured would just stay on with the new marshal.
At first Matt had been content in his new place. He kept busy just making the house into a home and tending stock.
But after a few weeks he realized he was lonely, and for one person especially.

He rode back to Dodge and walked in to the Marshal’s office.
John Pike the new Marshal was sitting behind his desk.
“Well Matt, I am surprise to see you so soon,” Pike said.
Matt shook his hand replied, “ Hello John. Just in for a few supplies. Where is Chester, out to the depot?’
“No Matt," Pike said as he began to shuffle a few posters. “I have my own deputy. I let Chester go. I didn’t see the need for two.”
“Let him go? Oh. Do you know where he is working now?” Matt said with a slight frown on his face.
“Not too sure about that. I did hear he had a room at Ma Smalley’s, though.”
Matt made his way over to Ma’s. He couldn’t help feeling that the whole town just felt different.
When he arrived at Ma Smalley’s he heard a pounding in the back.
He went around the house and found Chester busy nailing a few loose boards down.
“Chester!” Matt called
Startled, Chester turned around frowning.
But when he saw that it was Matt, he smiled and came limping over, wiping the grime from his hands onto his pants.
“Mr. Dillon I am purely glad to see you again.”
Matt grasped his hand to shake it but then impulsively pulled Chester to him in a hug.
Chester’s arms came up and returned the hug. He sagged almost gratefully against Matt’s chest.
Finally, Matt backed away and said. “I thought you would be working with Pike. Or else…"
Chester pulled out his handkerchief and wiped his eyes. “So did I Mr. Dillon, but Marshall Pike brung his own deputy….a whole man he said who could do a whole man’s job.”
Matt swallowed hard and said, “ I am sorry Chester. I didn’t mean to leave you up the creek like that”
“Oh, I am getting by, Mr. Dillon. I been doin’ odd jobs around town. And Ma lets me sleep in the barn and feeds me for helping around the roomin’ house.”
“Chester, would you come and leave with me on my ranch. I could use the help…. And I have missed you.”
“You have Mr. Dillon? I thought I was the only one had an empty place in my heart.”
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Matt kicked his horse into a trot and started down the hill. That had been almost two years ago.
At first it had been a mite awkward with Chester still calling him Mr. Dillon all the time.
But things soon settled down to a comfortable routine. It just seemed natural that one day they should kiss.
But the passion that the kiss ignited had surprised them both.
As clumsy as Chester seemed around women, he turned out to be a ardent and tender lover.
Matt discovered feelings deep inside himself; feelings he had never felt when he was bedding Kitty.
Matt dismounted at the house. He tied his horse to the rail and walked onto the porch.
As he opened the door, the smell of fresh coffee and biscuits wafted over him.
“Breakfast is ready Matt.” Chester called.
Ah yes, he was home….
