Our Brimstone Kid catches some slack here. Not a shot is fired, not a punch is thrown. He enjoys a good meal in a warm dry saloon while it snows outside and he has a room waiting in the hotel across the street. Quite a change from most stories where he ends up beaten and bloody and two-thirds dead.
One of the great mysteries of the Midnight War is how the incorrigible con artist Doc Valentine was active in the late 19th Century and yet also appeared (seemingly unchanged) around 2001-2005. (He is in "Doc Valentine and his Pal Bogus.") Maybe a victim of the Preincarnation spell, maybe a case of a great-grandson nearly identical to his ancestor? Possibly Valentine is a long-lived Melgar, although I doubt it. I don't think we will ever get to the bottom of this.
And the man who calls himself Wander doesn't stand out here,m but he has an interesting backstory. Twenty years earlier, he had been a shameless cardsharp and cheat along the Mississippi. He was competing with an equally sleazy rival for the affections of a young woman Evangeline. When a hurricane struck the area, she wanted to stay on board the riverboat GOLDEN QUEEN to look for the rival but Wander dragged her by force into a rescue boat. When the QUEEN went under, she blamed Wander for not allowing her to find the rival in time. This was why he was so bitter and solitarey as he roamed the Southwest under a new name that reflected his restless nature.
