It is very rare when the loss of one man is felt by millions of people. Yesterday, one of my mentors --and indeed the inspiration of an entire generation of hobbyists and professional musicians alike--passed away only 4 months after finding out he had an aggressive brain tumor.
Dr. Robert A. Moog was the inventor of the Moog synthesizer and was widely considered the father of electronic music. His instruments were designed with the careful attention to the details of what musicians actually asked for in their gear. He had every right to consider himself a giant, yet he was always humble and eager to talk, discuss and teach to anyone who asked.
I was fortunate to have met and talked with him at length about the keen balancing of musicianship and engineering needed to create truly great electronic musical instruments. His Moog Music booth was just a dozen feet from us at NAMM, and Bob always had time for everyone. As a kid, the Moog synthesizer defined the career path I wanted to take. Now, here I am doing the same things Dr. Moog did, but in my own way. The greater part of my passion in synthesizer design was due to Bob, and what he taught me will live on in the things I create.
Until we meet again, Bob.
