Carlotta makes her way up the driveway, having just been dropped off by her nagging grandmother.

As soon as the woman is out of sight, she shakes all of the ribbons out of her hair, then climbs up one of the tall trees to deposit her Important Stuff in places that are difficult to find and or get to.

After climbing down, she continues towards the

"Hullo, Carlotta."

Modesty waves at her from across the hall as she enters the front hall. It's far to bloody cold to be outside if you don't have to be!

"How was your Christmas?"

Carlotta gives her half a smile, that doesn't quite reach her eyes.

"All right, thanks miss. How was yours?"

"A bit lonely, I suppose," she says, forgetting that teachers aren't really supposed to actually answer questions from pupils, "but not too bad."

"I bet you didn't have to take elocution on every day except Christmas day." Carlotta says. "Did you stay here?"

"Luckily for me, no I didn't," she says. "No, I went back to my flat in London. Although I saw a friend on Christmas day, and was fed a truly appalling amount of turkey."

"It's the first time I had turkey, I rather enjoyed it."

"All the other trimmings as well, I take it?" She asks, and then gives a grin that is far too impish for a teacher. "I hope you didn't get too unfit over the hols, we need you on the hockey team!"

To say nothing of her gymnastic skills.

"Really, I made the team?!" Look at that excited face.

"And don't worry, every time my grandmother got too naggy I climbed out of the windows and over the rooftops."

"Second team, I think," Modesty says, trying to remember. "But you can work on getting onto the first team - you've got plenty of power in your hits, you just need a bit more accuracy!" That poor window. . . it was still patched with a bit of hardboard.

"Now," she says, looking at Carlotta out of the side of her eye, "should you really be telling me that?" She winks.

"What are you going to do?" Carlotta asks cheekily. "Phone her and tell her?"

"St Trinian's is really rubbing off on you, isn't it?" Modesty says, approvingly.

"Don't be a chump. Just don't get caught."

"Yes, I suppose it is." Carlotta says.

"She ain't said I can't do it anyway."

"Hasn't," she corrects, absently.

"Anyway, you know perfectly well that she wouldn't approve."

If Modesty had met this kid even five years ago, she would have taken her in hand and made her into an absolutely stunning cat-burglar. Actually, she doesn't have any moral objections to doing that now, just no personal monetary stake in Carlotta's theoretical criminal career.

"She doesn't approve of anything about me." Carlotta says with a shrug. "If I can't please I might as well enjoy myself."

"That's not a bad motto for life," Modesty says, smiling. "Only aim to please the people whose opinions matter to you."

Which is absolutely not what Carlotta said, but probably a good thing for her to think about.

Carlotta puts her bag on the floor.

"Miss, this may sound an odd question, but do any of the girls who study here manage to find employment as adults?"
