“To Be or Not To Be”
Creative writing assignment
By: James Leenhouts

To be, or not to be, that is the question.
Whether ‘tis nobler in life to live with out suffer
Forgo the vile stench of death, or to
Take arms to protect your native sea,
And by protecting them, die for them?
To die, to sleep; No more
And by death I end some deep turmoil,
The thousand lives I save by doing, die,
Tis a thing of duty and honor do I partake.
To die, to sleep
No greater good be done by no other? there’s the rub;
For in death do I help… Do... I… save?
This gives me pause.
And what is death?
Is life so much better then death, to be yellow?
For who would go through life in such a state,
The oppressor untouched and the weak to parish
The pangs of guilt of a deed undone, a sacred law,
To reap the sweat and blood of some other,
When your seas be swept for ones ideas,
Made red and thick in their blood,
Does not one lay one for all,
To grunt and sweat under a weary life not earned.
But that the dread of something after death,
The undiscovered country from whose bourn
No traveler returns, puzzles the will,
And makes us rather bear those ills we have
Than fly to the others we know not of?
But thus I must turn from Hamlet’s path,
No yellow feet or yellow hands do I bare
Entwined with the pale cast of thought,
I give enterprise to those who wish it
With my thick red flowing blood,
Let it flow in currents as other turn away
I lose not the name of action but gain it!
