This is one thing I failed to say in my post: I agree that, in general, child care should probably be cheaper, especially for those people who *can't* afford child care. The choices become skimp on child care and work, or don't work and go on welfare. What sort of a choice is that?

It would be nice if more companies provided child care. It's not an option for small companies, or the sorts of minimum-wage jobs that a lot of single parents with kids are working at, but I could see something like a consortium of companies getting together to subsidize child care for their employees, companies that couldn't afford to do so on their own. The thing about his point of view is, however, that he thinks child care should be cheaper, but he wants someone *else* to foot the bill for subsidies. And that gets nowhere. It's easy to complain. It's far harder to do something about it.

I can't possibly imagine being a single parent trying to work and provide care for their children. Add another one or two kids onto the firstborn, and it becomes impossible. It's a downward spiral.
