So my baby bird made it through the night but looked a little on the rough side this morning. Unfortunately plastic water bottles don't retain heat very well even when insulated, so they were pretty much room temp when I got up. The little guy was hungry and waiting for food as soon as I had opened the box to check on him. Too bad the worm mash had been in the fridge overnight and I didn't have time to warm them - he had to eat them cold. I got a little worried that the cold worms would kill him. He came to work with me and we all "awwww"-ed over him and then discussed possible names. We ended up with Colonel (pronounced Kernel...get it?) Orville. Not so much named after the popcorn, but I originally just wanted to name him Orville, after Orville Wright of the Wright brothers who invented the first successful airplane. But, as it turns out, Orville also looks and acts likes popcorn - bright yellow, and when he's hungry, he goes from sleeping to popping upright to wait for food. Hence Colonel!
Anyways, Melissa was nice enough to buy some baby bird feeding supplement and live mealworms, and bring in some chopped berries for him. And Sue went on a bug hunt while it was quiet in the store, lol. He's been pretty good with eating once every 30 minutes, but is a bit stubborn about opening up for food sometimes.
Melissa did a ton of research last night and came up with a schedule for raising Orville to be released in the future. Hopefully everything goes well! Keep your fingers crossed for us!
