"I feel useless..."
A tall boy, at the age of 19, was walking around the empty hallways of their new apartment. He was part of a Korean idol group named B1A4. There wasn’t that much to do since all he did that day was watch TV and wait until the other three members arrive back from their schedules.
You see they would have this routine that involved them talking to each other whatever problems they were having every Saturday night. Afterwards, to lessen the tension, they play all sorts of games to successfully lighten the mood. This was a way for them to become stronger as a group and as friends.
But sadly, three of the members were out on their own schedules. The maknae (the youngest member of the group) wanted to join his hyungs during their practice for this singing show called “Immortal Song 2”, but they refused and made him stay at home to rest because of all those long hours of practicing for their upcoming album.
So for the rest of the night, the only person in the apartment was the leader, Jinyoung. Feeling the need to talk to someone, the young boy walked over to their room and knocked on the door.
There was no answer at first so he knocked on the door again.
‘Ah… Maybe Jinyoung-hyung’s sleeping right now. I should just talk to him later,’ he thought, looking a bit dejected. But as he walked away, he heard the door open from behind.
“Gongchan, did you need to get something from the room?”
The aforementioned person turned around to see his hyung, standing by the doorway.
“Oh hyung. I was wondering if I could talk to you about something?” he replied.
The redhead, waiting by the doorway, gestured the raven-haired boy to come over. “Of course you can,” he said with a bright smile, “but can it wait a bit? I’m just finishing up on one of the songs for the album.”
After Gongchan entered the room, Jinyoung closed the door and rushed over to his seat on the floor, near his bed. He sat down in front of his laptop while unwinding the cords of his headphones. “It’ll take a few minutes if you don’t mind.”
Now it was Gongchan’s turn to give him a smile. “No problem, hyung. I bet that song will be great since our talented leader is the one making it,” he said in a teasing tone.
The other rolled his eyes. “Pft. Whatever.” Then he put his headphones back on and started to click away on his laptop.
While Jinyoung was focused on editing the song, Gongchan looked around to see the mess that the redhead had made when he was gone. There was clothes strewn on the floor, cords left tangled, and pieces of crumpled balled up paper overflowing the inside and outside of the trash bin.
The maknae sighed at the big mess. And it was worse compared to before when they live in their small cramped dorm before. This really contrasted the organized demeanor of the leader himself. Ever since they moved to a more spacious apartment, the mess increased tragically. Lost items would be scattered on the floor, where most of it would belong to Jinyoung or Sandeul, and Gongchan would always be the one to find it and bring it back like a dog looking for a bone in the yard.
On instinct, Gongchan stood up and started to clean their room. Usually, it was CNU who would end up cleaning it but it became a force of habit since CNU would try to instill that mannerism into him and the rapper, Baro, ever since their debut days.
Quietly, he picked up and folded the clothes then neatly hanged it up in their closet. A few minutes after picking up all of their clothes, he untangled all of the cords of the electronics and cleaning up the balls of crumpled paper of rejected lyrics and tunes.
Afterwards, deeming it was clean enough, the raven-haired boy walked back and saw that the redhead was still working on the song. Deciding it might take a while (because once the leader starts making a song, it’s pointless to try to get his undivided attention), Gongchan went up on the upper bunk bed, above Jinyoung’s.
He sat there, staring at his friend working diligently, even catching him hum a few tunes to see if it flows correctly. That’s one of the things that Gongchan admired about his hyung. Jinyoung always had that perfectionist attitude. At first, it was tiring for the other members to hear him complain about the mistakes they made but eventually, they understood on how much his criticizing has helped them. Whether it was outside or on TV, there was also that passion for singing and charisma that Jinyoung showed with no hesitation (along with Sandeul-hyung, of course). The only difference between them was that Jinyoung had an aura around him that showed that he was the leader.
The maknae sighed. He propped up both of his knees and rested his arms and head on top. He was doing it again and he couldn’t help but think about it again.
‘Am I really that incompetent?’ He was going into a sullen state until something tapped on his shoulders, distracting him from his thoughts.
“Gongchan-ah. Are you okay? What did you want to talk about?”
He turned to see the redhead he was thinking about earlier, climbing the ladder. Noticing he was in the way, he scooted over to make more room. Once Jinyoung settled himself next to Gongchan, he asked his dongsaeng, “So what happened?”
For a few seconds, the younger boy had felt a bit nervous and hesitated whether to spill out everything that he’s been feeling ever since the start of the month.
“Well…umm… Jinyoung-hyung. Am I really that important in B1A4?”
He looked up to the redhead but he didn’t see any sign of shock or surprise. It was just a look of understanding. As if he knew where this was coming from. All he saw him do was nod towards him, indicating that he should continue.
“I mean like compared to the other hyungs, I feel like I can’t do anything special. You can compose and write lyrics, Sandeul-hyung can make any song sound beautiful, Baro-hyung can make his own raps and CNU-hyung can dance and act. What can I do really besides doing aegyo? I mean yes I can sing but that’s because we’re supposed to know how since we are in an IDOL group.”
“Every day, I see you guys go off for your schedules. Baro-hyung and Sandeul-hyung would go off to make appearances in different shows while CNU-hyung is recording for ‘Need a Fairy’. Then you write and compose the songs to put in each of our albums and even participate in different shows too. And what have I been doing? Just stuck practicing in the dance studio by myself or with one of you guys if you’re not busy. I can’t help but think that I’m barely doing anything for the group. I really don’t understand why Manager-ssi hasn’t given me any work to do. I just feel so…useless.”
Gongchan finally took a breath after revealing most of what’s been bothering him. His chest suddenly felt lighter as he told Jinyoung. He looked up to see the redhead nodding and gave him an understanding look.
“So this is what’s been bothering you, Channie?”
The maknae bobbed his head up and down and buried his head on his arms. At the moment, the raven-haired boy felt a bit embarrassed and pathetic for telling his hyung about the whole situation. But it’s better than keeping it all bottled up, right?
“Channie, don’t worry. It’s normal to feel that way.”
He slightly turned his head to face his leader as he spoke.
“There’s a reason why the manager hasn’t given you any jobs like us. It’s because we don’t want you to overstress yourself especially after your kidney surgery,” he said, pointing to the younger one’s side. “It’s been a couple of months ever since you got your kidney removed and it’s dangerous if we make you overwork yourself especially since you still have your studies.”
“Also, we may be good at all those things but don’t forget. Ever since ‘Hello Baby’, people have been calling you a ‘variety genius’. Even the ladies, who were hosting the model show, wanted you to join them in gag concerts. We may have not won but you were able to leave a very good impression on all of them. You even did that fashion show for winter clothes that one time and you impressed a lot of people.”
“You are just learning more and that’s good to add for experience,” he reassured the raven-haired boy.
Listening attentively to what his hyung said, he turned his body to face Jinyoung and sat properly but still hiding his face. He didn’t want Jinyoung to see his sulky look.
“But Jinyoung-hyung,” he continued, “I also feel a bit bad. I mean for the fans. I see comments from them complaining about how I don’t have that many lines in any of the songs. I just don’t want them to be disappointed if they found out that I’m the one who’s been asking for less lines.” From sulky, his face suddenly turned into shame. “I just don’t like it how my actions are the reasons why I can’t help but feel useless really…”
The redhead just smiled and chuckled. Suddenly, he wrapped his arm around the back of Gongchan’s neck and ruffled his hair. “Ha… you still have a long way to go.” Gongchan pouted. “Hey! What do you mean by that?”
Without moving his arm, Jinyoung told him, “Don’t think it’s your fault, Channie. Like I said before, there are reasons for these kinds of things. Also I remember your first recording. You seemed really scared during that time.”
And he was right. The maknae was scared after his first recording for WM Entertainment. At one point, his voice froze as he was singing his part and after that, he just couldn’t hear it for a while. As a singer, the fear of not hearing your own voice could scare anyone. Then when he tried again, he was so nervous that when he heard the recording this time, it didn’t go too well.
“But look at you now, Channie. You’re able to perform on stage with no problem. Even during our filming for the music videos. Maybe you thought you weren’t good in them but for us, we could really see your effort and hard work which made your performance even better.”
“Also, the fans won’t be mad or disappointed. Knowing how they are, they would completely support your decision. But when you feel like you have more courage and you feel like you’re capable of singing more lines then tell me because I’ll give it to you,” he smiled at the sullen boy.
All the encouraging words were making Gongchan feel better by the second. These moments when he talks to Jinyoung about their problems were one of his favorites. But there was still something tugging in the edge of his mind.
“But hyung…”
“Hm?”
“I’m really glad that you told me this even though it makes me feel embarrassed for me telling you about this kind of thing. But I really can’t help but wonder if I can ever be helpful to the group. You guys are out there promoting on shows while I’m in the apartment most of the time. Really… what I can I do to help B1A4…?”
Jinyoung pondered for a minute then came up with an idea. He ruffled Gongchan’s hair one more time before heading back down the ladder.
“Gongchan-ah. Come down here for a minute.”
Following the leader’s orders, the maknae went down the ladder and saw Jinyoung sit in front his laptop, unwrapping the cords off the headphones. As soon as Gongchan sat next to him, Jinyoung gave the headphones to him.
“Can you please listen to this? I need to know if there’s anything wrong with it. Just listen to it and give me your honest opinion about it.”
Raising his eyebrow at the sudden favor, the raven-haired boy took it and carefully put the headphones on. Jinyoung saw that his dongsaeng was ready so he instantly played the song. As the song began, Gongchan had closed his eyes to envision what kind of image would the song show in his mind.
It started a bit quiet until a gust of wind filled his ears. The soft melody of a guitar began to play as the wind blew. The image was slowly changing around him. A field of grass surrounded him along with him seeing a familiar redhead play the guitar in the field. The environment seemed so serene compared to the bustling city he was so used to seeing every day.
A few seconds after Jinyoung was playing the guitar, he heard a piano from a distance. He turned to see his Sandeul-hyung play it as he hummed the tune. All of a sudden, a pop melody started to blend in with the acoustic instruments. Soon it became the song that Gongchan knew that B1A4 would make.
As the music continued, the rest of the members, CNU and Baro, appeared and they all gathered together in that mass field of grass. They all began to walk down the roadless path without knowing what may come. Feelings of lost hope reached to him and he saw it on the other members’ faces too. But near the end, it sounded a bit sadder than it should’ve been because; originally he imagined the members’ face to be smiling no matter what feeling was coming across. That was the kind of group that B1A4 was.
Slowly, the song ended and he opened his eyes.
Sensing the strange feel of reality once again, he saw Jinyoung looking at him intently. Then he removed the headphones, still a bit dazed from the song.
“So what did you think of the song? Anything wrong with it?”
Truthfully, the only part of the song that bothered him a bit was near the end. Gradually, at the climax of the song, it was like the pent up feelings were building up but after that it just became a gentle melody. It didn’t make much sense to Gongchan.
“Well there was something that bothered me a bit. It was near the end.”
“Oh really?” the leader said, sounding a bit surprised. “Which part?”
The maknae went over to the computer and gestured to a certain segment.
“It was this one, I think. I just don’t know understand why, when the melody begins to build up, it suddenly changes into a calm tune.”
“Oh that part. The message of the song was supposed to be about how hard it is to recover for a guy after he and his girlfriend break up,” he explained. “I didn’t know how to end it though so I just made it with the feelings of him finally accepting the situation.”
“I see…” the maknae replied. Something about it was still bothering him though.
“But if you have any suggestions then I think I can see what I can do about it,” Jinyoung suggested.
“Well…” Gongchan said. “I was thinking that you could probably change it to a stronger beat. In a way that emphasizes the strong feelings of how the guy releases all his emotions about breaking up. But in the melody, with a bit of a reversal, it gives a bit of hope that he could stand up and walk on his own again.”
Jinyoung pondered about it, which made Gongchan a bit nervous. His thoughts started to be filled with negative thoughts of it being rejected.
But then he saw his hyung flash a bright smile. “Yeah. I think that’s a good idea. Let’s try it out!” And Gongchan couldn’t help but smile too.
Quickly, Jinyoung started to edit the song in the same image as Gongchan did. A few minutes later, they both listened to the finished song and it met up to both of their expectations. After saving the song file, the leader stretched out his arms from his tired state.
“Thanks to you, Channie, we’re a step closer to finally finishing the album.” He gave the dongsaeng a high five. “All that’s left is the lyrics but I guess we can take a break since it’s almost dinner,” he said, closing his laptop. “Now do you understand?”
Gongchan showed a confused look to Jinyoung. “What do you mean?”
A soft chuckle left the redhead’s lips. “Gongchan, you have always been important to B1A4. Don’t let others make you think otherwise. If you weren’t part of the group, then who knows what would’ve happened to this song,” he gestured to his laptop, “and all the other ones you helped me out with. Just take a step at a time until you can finally walk on your own. If you need help, you know we are always here for you. Us and the BANAs so don’t forget that.”
A smile showed on the maknae’s face as his hyung told him those words. It really made him feel stupid for thinking about all those angst thoughts before. He felt a great weight being lifted from him and his happiness returned.
“Thanks, Jinyoung-hyung,” he said giving his hyung a hug. “I’m really glad to be in this group.” Then he let go. “I promise that I’ll work harder so I can catch up with everyone.”
The redhead smiled and raised his fist in the air, “Hwaiting!” They both laughed. Suddenly, a growl interrupted them. Gongchan looked at his stomach with embarrassment. He wrapped his arms around his stomach, hoping it wouldn’t make any more noise.
Jinyoung chuckled. “You hungry, Channie?”
Timidly, Gongchan nodded his head.
He laughed again. “Okay, let’s go eat some dinner already.” He stood up, stretching his arms, and walked over to the door. “What do you want to eat? I’ll be cooking it.”
At the mention of food, Gongchan suddenly sprang to life and ran over to Jinyoung. “Can I have some cucumber kimchi then?”
The redhead rolled his eyes. “But you just had some last week. You know how your diet is.”
Not giving up, the raven-haired boy did his aegyo in front of his hyung. “Please, hyung? I promise I won’t eat it again next week.”
Trying not to look at the younger one, he turned his head away from him. “I told you, you’re not allowed to eat it.”
He went in front of his hyung and made a cuter face. “Come on. Pretty please, hyung? Just for today.”
Eventually, Jinyoung gave in to Gongchan’s cute looks. It was hard for him to say ‘no’ to the maknae.
“Fine fine. I’ll go make some cucumber kimchi for you since you did a good job today.”
“Whoo!” Gongchan cheered. “Thanks again, Jinyoung-hyung!”
As they headed over to the kitchen, the redhead grabbed the raven-haired boy in a headlock and ruffled his hair more. He smirked and said, “Whatever.” He let go and hurried off to the kitchen.
Gongchan pouted and fixed his hair. “Just wait and see on what I’ll put in your portion today,” he muttered, revealing a malicious grin on his face, as he chased after Jinyoung.
