Do renters win when middle-class homeowners lose?

This is one of those topics I bring up at parties of 20-somethings and just kill the conversation instantly. Haha. I've often wondered what the relationship is between rent and the sub-prime mortgage meltdown. Day after day there are news articles about home prices plummeting but what about the effect for renters? They have never said, until now. ( Read more... )

how'bout a mass revolutionary rent strike for the purpose of abolishing rent and the landlord class. I believe this was tried in Spain during the revolutionary period as an initiative of the CNT union.

the problem here is that there are going to be people who are more than willing to take over and pick up the rent to inhabit the place if there's a strike. pushing things towards a massive scale free economy is difficult as fuck, the best thing to do is to live up to the ideal in every way individually... it's pretty daunting.
