Charles Cavanaugh, 93, of 93 Branch St., died peacefully Monday, December 22, 2008, in Oakdale Nursing Center, West Boylston, after a long illness.
He is survived by his wife of 70 years, Lillian M. (Strunz) Cavanaugh; two sons: Charles E. Cavanaugh and his wife, Ann, of Hudson, and Edward "Patrick" Cavanaugh and his wife, Bonnie, of Clinton; a daughter, Jane J. Hussey of Clinton; eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. Three brothers, John, Thomas, and George, and three sisters, Jesse, Florence, and Mary, predeceased him.
Charles was born and raised in Leominster, the son of Thomas and Mary (Jewett) Cavanaugh, and attended local schools.
For thirty-five years before his retirement, Charles worked as an oil burner mechanic for Rauscher Oil Co. of Clinton, making countless friends along the way. Previously, he worked for the former Weber & Rose Furniture, and the Altman's Furniture, both of Clinton.
He was a member of the United Church of Clinton, and the Clinton Turn Verein, and loved to play cards in tournaments held at Turner Hall. Charles greatly enjoyed the many mornings he spent having breakfast at John's Sandwich Shop with his "Breakfast Buddies". He also took great pleasure in fishing, and summering at Bear Hill Pond, where he was affectionately known by his neighbors as "Mr. Fix-it".
Charles's funeral will be held on Saturday, December 27, 2008, with a service at 11:00 a.m. in the McNally & Watson Funeral Home, 304 Church St. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Cemetery, Clinton. A calling hour will be held in the funeral home from 10:00-11:00 a.m., prior to the funeral service. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the United Church of Clinton, 109 Haskell Ave., Clinton, MA 01510.
