The dispirit of cosplay

No matter how many bad cosplays I see out there, I will continue to cosplay.

I hate the snobism, the utter hate coming from observers directed at bad and mediocre cosplay. Do you tell ugly people they're ugly? Do you judge them for it? I hate bad costumes just as much as you do. They make me cringe inside. But I also hate fat people. Why then, oh why do I not cringe at them?

We feel personally offended when someone miscosplays. We feel as if the character belongs to us, and with a bad costume, is destroyed.

Let's think otherwise: a costume is a costume. It's a veneration, a temple to the character. No matter how it's worn, it's still an expression of someone's love or obsession. Please don't shit on that.

I want to go back to that first convention, that first year, when we still walked through the halls hugging everyone because they were just so cool. Half assed Ichigos, short Kaminas, tall Narutos. All of them were fantastic, in our eyes. Remember?

Now, even as I go to the convention as Erza, I find myself unwilling to speak to Grey, Natsu, Lucy, because they're not perfect.

Do you find yourself doing the same?
