Thus far, I have seen two practical uses for condoms in filmaking.
(1) Lord of the Rings: To emphasize the 'thuds' of the catapulted boulders while filming the Battle of Pelennor Fields, sound engineers buried microphones into the ground to capture the sound of a crane dropping a large concrete block. To protect these microphones, they covered them in condoms.
(2) Pan's Labyrinth: To film the 'Pale Man' eating the fairies, fake blood was placed into several condoms and Doug Jones (the 'Pale Man' and the Faun) was told to bite into these condoms.
