Learning from the Past
Abigail pinched the bridge of her nose in unconscious imitation of her father and let the parchment drop to the table.
“Bad news?” Teddy reached across the table and took her hand, sending gentle sparks along her arm as he stroked his thumb across her knuckles.
“Our daughter is not a complete dunderhead.” She winced at her own word choice. I thought I was supposed to worry about turning into my mother.
“Of course not!”
“So why is she acting like … well, like both of us?” She thrust the tear-stained and badly-penned note across to him and watched his gray-flecked but still turquoise hair dull as he read.
Wordlessly, he flicked his wand, and a fresh piece of parchment sailed over to him with a self-inking quill, and he began to write.
She stepped around the table to read over his shoulder.
Dear Ruthie,
Have I ever told you about the many mistakes I made …
Abigail smiled and ruffled her husband’s brightening hair as he told their story. Maybe Ruthie would be lucky and not repeat their mistakes.
