Feeling broken

Oh man. This is absolutely gorgeous. It's the exact emotion I was hoping for when I prompted this, feeling broken and not being able to change it or talk about it--but you took it even more literally than my brain had and turned it into this beautiful piece. All the extreme descriptions with the coffee cup, Sam's fixation on it and how emotions in him built to that moment and what it symbolizes... and Dean just thinks of it as a startling thing that's happened out of nowhere, like it couldn't possibly be because Sam can't talk, because that's nothing new. But just because you've accepted a disability doesn't mean anger and emotion can't flood over you at once at random times or even always be in you. And Sam trying to communicate what he's feeling is so beautiful and terrible. I could hear that thump against his chest. So much emotion. Gorgeous writing. I love this. I plan to read it a dozen times today.

This definitely is an excellent example of the community's name. Oh Sam!

Thanks! I'm so glad you liked it. You know those moments when you get an image in your head, and for one brief moment in time you're able to run with it and feel like everything just clicks right into place? I had that here, so that's for the awesome prompt.

YAY! Glad you were inspired! Thanks for pointing me to "Still" as well. That one kind of broke me. I'm still recovering. Oh Sam!

From Wikipedia: "Often those with aphasia will try to hide their inability to name objects by using words like thing. So when asked to name a pencil they may say it is a thing used to write."

Now I want to see something where Sam at a diner can only describe salt as that thing you use to keep ghosts out.

Oh, I loved this take on the prompt - Sam feeling emotionally broken as well as physically with not being able to talk. I loved how you captured his frustration at not being able to voice his fears, concerns and thoughts.
