So hopefully this is sort of what you had in mind. I'm always nervous posting comment fics since there's probably a million errors but please forgive me. I didn't specify or give any clues to the boys' ages so feel free to pick your own lol. Hope you like it.

Dean hates shopping. He especially hates the big superstores that attract all the lunatics. Not just your average bargain shopper lunatic but apparently the clinical lunatics as well. After all, one giant building filled with plenty of hostages is the perfect place to make a former employer pay for firing you. At least that’s what the nut job waving the semiautomatic rifle thinks.

Of course it’s their luck that the one day Dean gives in and goes shopping they get caught in the store with a crazed and disgruntled ex-employee. It also figures Dean had actually listened to Sam and walked in unarmed, except for the knife hidden in his sock. Not that the knife is going to do him any good.

It’s been almost twenty minutes since the gunman had fired off one shot to the ceiling and effectively grabbed everyone’s attention. Some people had tried to cower behind shelves while others slowly came forward with their hands held high. Dean wonders if the bastard managed to block the exits but he’s relieved no one has been dumb enough to try and escape.

He has the sickening feeling this man doesn’t actually want to hurt anyone but he can also see the guys so lost that he could snap at any second. Trying to make a run for it with a mental case holding a gun is not a chance Dean’s willing to take and he’s not exactly in the mood to see anyone else get their brains blown out either.

They had just walked in when the gunman made his presence known so they were among the lucky ones that first caught the man’s attention. It took ten minutes for him to get everyone positioned the way he wanted-sitting close together on the ground in front of him so he can see all of his unfortunate hostages.

Sam had managed to pull Dean to the far side, his hand gripping Dean’s forearm tight enough to leave a bruise. Every instinct in Dean has been screaming for him to take the guy out and get everyone, especially Sam, to safety. But a part of him is glad Sam’s here to stop him from doing just that. If Dean were to attack right this second he’s almost positive it wouldn’t end pretty.

So he holds back, stuck like a sitting duck just watching as the man executes his shaky plan. It all seems like your average hostage situation until the gunman goes for the large duffle bag at his feet. He pulls out four black vests and Dean’s eyes go wide when he realizes what the vests really are.
