"Yeah. I always knew you were smart," she replies, with a chiming laugh. He can't compose a reply, just steps up on the chair and grabs the new bulb Jess passes to him.
It's good that this is going to be a quick operation, because his balance isn't that great on a chair that rolls from side to side whenever he twitches. Before he has time to worry about it, the busted bulb is already unscrewed and in his hand, and the new one half into its socket.
"This is why I keep you around, not your brains. So much easier than having to go get a ladder." Sam chuckles, finishes up, and moves to step down.
The wheels roll across the polished hardwood floor.
His arms wheel madly, and he tries to grab at the light fixture, but he can't reach, because he's falling.
"Sam!" Jess screams, because he's just smashed into the granite counter headfirst, and that really fucking hurt. He lands on the floor, right on his shoulder, and flops down heavy. "Sam!" she screams again. It's suddenly incredibly bright, and he shuts his eyes.
"Jess? What's wrong?" someone asks through the ringing static pounding in his ears.
"Sam was changing the bulb, he fell, and now he's passed out --" He opens his eyes, blinking at the blinding light.
"What happened? Fuck, my head hurts." He reaches up and tries to rub at the raging ache on the side of his skull, but just brushing his fingertips across it sets it aflame.
His fingers are sticky when he pulls them back. "Oh, God, you're bleeding. Mom, call 911, go call them. Sam, are you okay? Are you nauseous or anything?" Without giving him time to answer, she grabs a wad of paper towels, and presses them against his head.
"No, shit, no, that hurts, stop that!" He paws at her hands, but she's remarkably persistent. Nausea grips his stomach suddenly, and he rolls over, pukes all over the floor. After he's done, he tries to sit up and wipe at his mouth, but his head is spinning like mad, and he lays back down onto the floor.
"Don't try to move or anything, you might -- Sam, you're bleeding everywhere, holy crap," Jess exclaims. She presses harder against the side of his head, and he moans. "I'm sorry, baby, I'm sorry, I'm so sorry."
Now she's crying.
"What happened, anyways? Where are we?" He can't remember anything that happened since he woke up. It should be worrying, but he's too busy being concerned with the blood pouring out of his scalp and the agonizing pain coursing around the inside of his skull.
"You were changing the light bulb in my parents' kitchen, you fell and hit your head on the counter, you don't remember?"

I love how "he's happy to do it, because no one else can." That's just too adorable. Poor Sammy, all bloody and with amnesia. Even the simple things do him in.

I will be updating soon, hopefully tonight :D Sorry for the massive delay! School has sort of blown up in my face and I've had no time, but tonight seems to be my night off.

Sam smiles dizzily up at Jess, because his vision is going black and blurry, and he can't feel the throbbing as much. Even though he knows that this is most definitely a bad sign, it's much better than the pain. "My head hurts. Where are we?"
A tear falls and splashes on his cheek. "Come on, babe, you're gonna be fine. There's an ambulance coming, alright? What do you need? Are you -- no, of course you're not okay, that's a stupid question, you're bleeding. Why don't you scoot over here so you're not lying in the -- no, wait, don't move, just stay there, you're gonna be alright." Jess can't stop moving her hands all over him, gently, trying to find a good place to come to rest. Her fingertips are twitching in time with Sam's fluttering heart.
"Sir? Can you tell me your name?" someone asks, from far above him. He considers it for a second, trying to pull his name out of the swirling void of non-memories whirling around his skull, but he can't find it. Trying to shake his head in denial is a terrible idea; his head must certainly be on fire, for the pain rushing through it.
"Sam? Oh, God, Sam --" His eyelids close, and he's asleep.
(Sorry for the short update -- and that it's so late -- I totally do not do comment fic well, this is taking forever. I should be able to do more tonight, though.)

Yay, love the update! No worries about the delay - it's worth waiting for, and we all know how RL gets maddeningly in the way of the important things (like writing :-P).

Sam doesn't remember a thing.
