Chapter 1 - A Morning Stroll

It was barely light outside when Tsuruoka lifted his head to peer at the dim rays of light that just made it through the paper-fitted windows of the place known as the Ooku. Despite his trying to be gentle, Tsuruoka’s movement hadn’t gone unnoticed - the man beside him stirred a little in his sleep as his arm was suddenly released of its burden. With a small smile, Tsuruoka couldn’t help but gaze at his companion - no, he corrected himself - his lover.

As the sun started to flood more and more of the room with light, Tsuruoka felt a warm feeling that he could only describe as love inundating his senses. He loved the way the sun’s rays warmed Matsushima’s face, bringing even more radiance to his already flawless face. He loved how close they were together, with nothing preventing their bare skin from touching. He loved how kind Matsushima was, taking special care of him and allowing him to share his bed. In fact, Tsuruoka felt it was safe to say, he loved him. With every moment they spent together, Tsuruoka was reminded more and more of this fact.

In the Ooku, Tsuruoka and Matsushima were nearly legendary in their renown. Tsuruoka was known in the Ooku was the strongest swordsman, his kendo skills unsurpassable by any of the other samurai, while Matsushima was known as the Ooku’s most beautiful man, perfect in both face and body. And it was no wonder how Matsushima had gained that epithet, just looking at him made Tsuruoka’s heart flutter. After he had met him for the first time at the dojo, he couldn’t help but try to get close to him, and when he spent his first night with him, he couldn’t help but come back for more.

Without meaning to, Tsuruoka felt a sigh escape from between his lips, the small sound waking Matsushima. As the older man slowly opened his eyes, blinking at the light with long lashes, Matsushima pulled himself upward, his lips pulling back into a smile.

“Good morning,” he said, his voice deep and melodious, just the way Tsuruoka liked it.

“Good morning, Matsushima-sama,” he replied, inclining his head slightly to press his lips against the other’s. He felt Matsushima’s lips move against his, as the other man reached up an arm to pull him impatiently towards him. Tsuruoka allowed him to take control, as Matsushima so often liked to do. He didn’t mind. What made his Matsushima-sama happy made him happy too.

After a moment, Tsuruoka reluctantly pulled away, his sense of duty coming between his feelings of lust and desire. “We should get ready,” he said, pushing gently on Matsushima’s bare shoulder. “Who knows if the Shogun is going to call a morning audience today? It won’t do for us to show up in such a shoddy state.”

Matsushima sighed. “Yes, of course, Tsuruoka.” Then, a mischievous glint appeared in his gaze. “Say, would you like some help with that?” he asked, an arm already snaking around Tsuruoka’s slim waist.

“Matsushima-sama!” he exclaimed in mock shock, one hand flying up to cover his mouth.

However, Tsuruoka couldn’t cover up his laughter as Matsushima pushed him back down again onto the bed, all thoughts of getting dressed forgotten.

As things turned out, much to Tsuruoka’s relief, the Shogun did not call an audience that morning, leaving him free to spend the rest of his day with Matsushima. When the older man had suggested going on a stroll through the Ooku’s gardens, Tsuruoka agreed happily, content with just being beside the man - they weren’t permitted to show affection when in public. After all, they were here for the Shogun’s enjoyment, not each other’s.

Just as they walked past a small pond teeming with koi fish, Tsuruoka noticed not far ahead of them what he perceived as a moving patch of ground. As Tsuruoka observed the patch more closely, he noticed it start to swirl and turn into water, like that of a spring. Slowly, something appeared out of the spring, its form revealing itself little by little. Then, without warning, the spring vanished as soon as it had come, leaving the ground exactly the way it was before it had appeared. And, now that enough of what the spring had deposited had fully materialized into view, Tsuruoka was able to discern what it was.

It was a man.
