David Armstrong talking about Boyd

Dec 15, 2011 13:46

In an interview David Armstrong was asked about Boyd. Here's the excerpt:

S.B.: Nobuyoshi Araki once said, speaking about flowers, "I’m attracted to them because they decay, and I get an erotic sensation when I see them wilt". The inevitable fate of your models' youth could be sensed almost as clearly, their sexuality as innocent and raw as if they were flowers. You dedicated your latest book, 615 Jefferson Avenue, to Boyd Holbrook, whose portraits date back to 2002. Any chance that we will still see him in your pictures, ten years from now?

D.A.: With Boyd, very much so though not the case with many others. I was enchanted by Boyd when I first met him. Over the years through which I shot him we developed a very close friendship. When I began making portraits a long time ago they were primarily of friends or lovers with whom a relationship preexisted. It's the reverse with these, where the relationship was initiated by making a photograph, the tail wagging the dog. To photograph Boyd through the years has been a great joy for me as it was to see him grow up. So many lessons learned by both of us. As with anyone you love you never cease to see the radiant beauty emanating from within them at every stage of life. It's so different with each person, and too complicated to get into in a format like this.
