I'm not surprised, this show can be overwhelming no wonder why so many actors choose to eave after a couple of seasons. It won't surprise me if season 10 will be his last.
There's a lot of running, a very high energy set, they pack in a lot of work in a short amount of time. They had these video diary series for Tennant for the first two of his series and you could really see how hard the work was with even little glances.
Late, but as the other poster said. It is a very active show. Lots of stun work and running. Plus it is such a huge part of British culture at this point, you constantly have to be ready to be in character while doing a lot of behind the scenes stuff to promote the show and other stuff related to the show (games/audio novels, etc.). Plus you go in with the knowledge that no matter what roles you did before and after, you will always be known for this one.
He and Matt have both done their knee in from doing stuff on the set so even without the massive amount of media attention (and ridiculous amount of online hate) it's probably not something you want to keep doing for long.
