they’re a team on dangerous inmates recruited to pull of black-ops missions for the US government with the promise of a reduced sentence. The team is 100% expendable, and may be incapable of working together, but they’re kept in line through the explosive wired into their spine. The comic has been getting published for decades with a rotating roster of characters

I think it was more along the lines of "I'm not familiar enough with these characters to know who would do them justice."

true, although i feel like most of the characters (minus harley, waller, and deadshot) are so obscure that you could pretty much get a decent action movie cast together, throw a few darts, and pick which characters are in the movie that way lol
