Why this campaign is a mess: http://www.blackgirldangerous.org/2014/09/im-really-emma-watsons-feminism-speech-u-n/

Ugh, I can't with this nonsense. So many white liberals, I might heave.

Yeah I agree with what she's saying here. I said basically the same thing to my friend and his roommate that were like "Omg she's so perfect omg amazing" and they just kind of shot it down.

I got in a full-on fight with my friend about it.

I see it as Gender flavored Reaganomics. Let's make men feel better in the hopes that some of that trickles down on women!

Haha good point

Side note / Although the actual social science of gender equality is very clear- it works the other way. When women are lifted up, men and the whole society is lifted. This can be measured in terms of GDP, education etc.

The Al Jazeera piece was pretty good too. I also don't get girls being like "Don't make it about race!!!"

FEMINISM & RACE HAVE EVERYTHING TO DO WITH EACH OTHER WHAT ARE THESE PEOPLE TALKING ABOUT. YOU ARE PROVING THEIR POINT WITH YOUR EXCLUSIVITY.

/sorry that statement gets me heated.

Please get heated -- seriously, I cannot with people trying to act like any kind of feminism can exist without taking a look at other forms of inequality, racism, and every other kind of ism that needs to be looked at. So infuriating.

I shouldn't have Twitter searched some of these idiots. Actually just read this: "Please don't criticize Emma Watson speech at least shes trying to make a change AND DONT INCLUDE WHITE FEMINIST INTO ITS NOT ABOUT RACE"

It's like...bravo with your erasure because your little feelings are hurt. Or a WoC calls them out via social media & then they are like "Well please educate me then!!" Educate yourself ffs. You can like Emma's speech & still critically assess the problems. Being an ally is also about having to deal with your shit & feel uncomfortable sometimes with privilege. Ugh I need a drink.

haha yes I saw some of those "don't make it about her race! She can't help being white, young, rich and beautiful!!". puhlease. Some people really need to learn the word intersectionality and apply it to their thought process.

People who say that are just undercover racists, who don't know how to talk about race without prejudice. It makes them uncomfortable because they know talking openly about it means it's only a matter of time before they say something racist, or their racism gets proven wrong, and they figure that'll get them into trouble because it's a social taboo.

My mother does it a bit, always hissing at me to stop bringing race up because she disagrees with my radical "don't judge people by their skin colour" views lol, but she's always the first to bring it up when a person of colour does something she doesn't like. Then I inevitably call her on her shit and sure enough: "DON'T MAKE IT ABOUT RACE".

It must be exhausting being racist lmao.

spot on article
I mean, it's great she made the effort and spoke up but srsly, I didn't find anything groundbreaking in her speech. Let's hope she educates herself bc being in the position she is, she has the ability to raise awareness more than others can.

I read this too and agreed with a lot of it. The writer is aware that people can still learn as they grow, and sometimes it takes one topic for other realizations to occur. So I wouldn't label this as messy, just a jumping off point for many people to pull the wool from their eyes.

I was just about to post this!!

I do think Emma's heart is in the bestest of places, and that a lot what she said rings true (and needed to be said on a global platform). But in the end of her speech, it seems like her speech is saying that men need to be included for change to happen, and that they've been excluded all this time. Like, I'm all for allies and people wanting to help, but feminism as a movement has never outright denied men for being apart of it, rather given women the chance to have their voices heard first to help create equality.

Plus I think feminism in it's present form definitely needs work to include WOC and the LGBTQ community before issuing men as another force that these two groups would have to deal with.

//I still love you Emma.
