Zach Galifianakis and Ted Danson pretend to be The National

The National's Mistaken for Strangers turned out to be less of a traditional rockumentary than a fascinating portrait of two brothers who couldn't be less alike. Now, Zach Galifianakis has his heart set on turning the story of brothers Matt and Tom Berninger into an intense, emotionally harrowing theatrical production, as chronicled in this excellent new Funny or Die sketch, in which Zach Galifianakis as his real-life doppelganger Tom Berninger and Galifianakis’ Bored To Death co-star Ted Danson plays Matt for the stage version of the documentary. The best part of the video comes when Matt gives Danson advice on how to do that whole precarious walking-over-the-crowd thing that he does at so many shows.

A version of Mistaken For Strangers with a whole lot of bonus footage is out now at iTunes and on DVD.
"There is some extra footage out there. Some of it's so bad, though!" Tom said, to which Matt joked: "That's what's good about it."
Matt added: "There's gonna be a huge bonus version of it. The plan is well under way and Tom is working on it right now. There's no hope - it's definitely happening."

Of the funny scene where The National's drummer Bryan Devendorf is filmed naked in the shower, Tom joked: "I have the rest of the guys in their own shower scenes [on extra footage]. But I thought Bryan was the sexiest so I left him in."

[really liked this documentary -- more about dealing w/ a more successful sibling and finding your own path in life than just about The National. did not know enough people watched it that they'd make a sketch about it though.]
