Top 10 [5] Movie Ghosts
It’s October, which means we have another excuse to celebrate the horror genre and everything it’s done to contribute to our recurring night terrors. This week, we’re taking a look at a classic horror concept, the ghost. So, we’re counting down the top 10 movie ghosts (spoiler alert: Casper doesn’t make it on this list, because he’s really annoying). We scoured the movieverse for some of the best ghosts cinema has to offer and came up with some truly nightmarish picks. So turn those lights on and be sure you’re safely tucked in bed before you start reading this (it’s common knowledge that ghosts can’t hurt you if you’re under covers), because some of these are bound to stir up memories of bad dreams. 10. Kane (The Poltergeist franchise)- To be honest, we’re grandfathering Kane in because of the first Poltergeist film. The two that followed and introduced the malevolent spirit by name were a little lackluster, but you have to admit that there’s something creepy about Kane. It could be the dressing all in black or his Walton Goggins-esque teeth, or maybe it’s the whole mass murder thing, but this guy has something to creep everyone out. He’s one of the original creepers, and he's very good at making everyone feel really uncomfortable.
8. Dr. Malcolm Crowe (The Sixth Sense)- Spoiler alert! Well, kinda. Seriously, if you didn’t know that Bruce Willis was a ghost in The Sixth Sense, than I’m not sure what to tell you. I mean, it’s pretty much common knowledge at this point. However, once upon a time, it was not common knowledge, and despite how we might feel about M. Night Shyamalan, there was a time when he was actually pretty good at what he did. Unfortunately, like Dr. Malcolm Crowe, that time is long since dead.
5. The Grady Twins (The Shining)- The only thing creepier than one kid is two kids, and the only thing creepier than two kids is twins. And if they’re the ghosts of murdered twins, then it’s time to get right the hell out of there. Sure, the Grady twins we’re exactly malevolent spirits (unlike their dirtbag dad), but If I turned a corner and saw them standing there, my initially reaction would be a big bag of “Nope.” I mean seriously, of all the creepy things from The Shining, those two are what really stick with me to this day. Well, them and the elevator filled with blood.
3. Eleanor Twitty (Ghostbusters)- Eleanor Twitty is otherwise known as The Grey Lady, or, more commonly, that freaky library ghosts that nearly made us piss ourselves in the fourth grade. The first time the Ghostbuster ever encounter an evil spirit on-screen, it’s this ghostly librarian, and she makes quite an impression. People seem to think of Jim Henson as only making these lovable little characters, but they don't remember that he made some truly nightmarish ones as well. Despite the fact that Ghostbusters was more a comedy than anything else, I’m sure I’m not the only one who had a few sleepless nights because of this lady.
1. Freddy Krueger (The Nightmare on Elm Street franchise)- Our No. 1 pick is a little bit tricky this week. By all accounts, Krueger is a ghost. After all, he’s pretty much dead, and he only torments people in dream land, which leads me to believe that he’s a specter. That makes him the obvious choice for our top slot. Now, Freddy is a little more hands-on than some of our other picks, and he isn’t really the “knock over a vase” type. No, this guy has racked up a pretty impressive kill count over the years, and he made it on our Top 10 Modern Horror Icons list as well. He’s not the kind of ghoul you’d ever forget, not that you’d get the chance, with his murderous track record.
