but if you boycott them you only end up damaging the working class...it's not gonna do anything good for anyone, I think we can only sign petitions and pressure Russia at this point :\

I don't think that's 100 percent right. This Olympics more than any other has been abt govt and nepotism. It's going to be a mess. I hope the working class is helped in some way however I don't think it will change a ton.

People's lives are at risk. Petitions and pressure will do nothing. They need sanctions put of them.

LiveJournal = Russia. I'm sure this site is in danger of shutting down.

Do the athletes want to boycott?

Probably not. Four years of training and have it all be for nothing isn't a good deal. But then I imagine how much harder it is for the homosexual athletes/coaches/associates. :(

I wish every country did. It would be hilarious to see Russia be the only ones participating, automatically win and then feeling mighty proud of themselves for winning everything.

Johnny wrote a pretty good article about it. He doesn't represent all athletes, but he makes two good points. One, showing up in a rainbow skating suit is better than not showing up at all. And two, athletes train all their lives for this one moment.

Rock and a hard place, tbqh.

I saw that he wrote something but didn't read it yet. The comment about training all their lives to compete at the Olympics is always what gets to me about any boycott talk.

I heard a program here in Canada (CBC), and they spoke to some athletes who stated they did not think there should be a boycott. A speedskater from New Zealand stated he'd wear his pride pin proudly. A Russian LGBT spokesperson stated they were against boycotts. They are going to put up a Pride Pavilion. Their idea seemed to be that showing a united front on Russian soil would be a bigger deal than a boycott. I fear it would give those who seek to injure homosexuals a national platform to get across their bigotry. The athletes might have security, but tourists don't.

Those are some pretty good points. It seems like that would be way more effective than a boycott.
