Crystal Castles Preview Ecstatic New Song 'Telepath' Live, Off Delayed '(III)' Album + Track List
Bleak electro pummelers brighten up on new nu-raver
Crystal Castles' songs, even when they were of the chirpy 8-bit variety, have always been dark and implicitly violent. Consequence of Sound points to live footage of the Canadian duo performing a new one live in Denver this week, and what's most striking is how comparatively blissed out this neo-rave floor-stomper is. The glowsticks in the audience don't look out of place, and it's easy to imagine dancing to this joyfully rather than with a tinge of mosh-related anxiety.
That might have something to do with the absence of Alice Glass's ever-peircing banshee wails on vocals, as the track appears to be instrumental. But the brighter colors are in producer half Ethan Kath's four-on-the-floor clatter, too, its busy percussion coming closer to the rock-informed disco of DFA Records than we've heard before from these two. If the YouTube submission is correct, the track is "Telepath," from Crystal Castles' upcoming but delayed third album, (III).
CoS and Pitchfork both report that the LP's release date, originally set for November 5 digitally and November 6 physically in the U.S., has been pushed back a week. Amazon's website confirms the album will be out physically in the U.S. on November 13. Advance tracks "Plague" and "Wrath of God" have already surfaced, and though the latter is almost Twin Peaks-romantic at points, both songs ultimately bring the foreboding as you'd expect.

Pitchfork: You recently faced a backlash after saying that you don't vote because "there's something else out there pushing the buttons." How did you interpret that whole situation?
Kendrick Lamar: I'm a person of my own opinions, that's how I was raised. I speak what I feel. The world is bigger than us, and I'm the only person that said that. A lot of people feel the same way but they're scared to talk. They're really scared of the truth-- they only want half of the truth. I've been living like that-- forever in fear-- but I know what to say and how to say it now. I ain't scared of myself. Y'all may be scared; I'm not scared.
Pitchfork: Do you think people in general are scared of comments like that?
KL:Nobody likes to mix the spiritual world with politics. I mean, I'm all for Obama. Gotta be. I respect the fact that our ancestors put us in the forefront to have the power to do what we do. But I'm going through something within myself spiritually that doesn't mix with politics or the world right now. I want kids to go out there and experience voting-- you gotta do that. But just know what you're voting for and who you're voting for in your heart, and not just because of who wants you do it a certain way.
Pitchfork: To a lot of people, your friendship with Lady Gaga is kind of weird, but I imagine it doesn't feel that way to you.
KL: Yeah, it's cool. She's a regular person. We became friends off of the genuine love for the music. She just hit my phone one day and said that she had a respect for the hip-hop that I was doing, that it wasn't like anything she heard on the radio. Then chemistry collided from there. What I respect about her more than anything is her originality. She's not afraid to be herself, and that's the same thing that Black Hippy represents.
Pitchfork: What was it like recording with her?
KL: Genius. She's over-the-top creative. You have to be in a whole other world to actually think the way she thinks. We did two or three records together, we'll figure it out where they're going to go.

Black Hippy figurehead Kendrick Lamar, who'll release his major-label debut good kid, mA.A.d. city on October 22, had some special guests at his show last night in Los Angeles. Nah Right points to this video of the show, in which Dr. Dre-- who's been something of a mentor figure to Kendrick-- joined him on stage for "Compton" and "The Recipe".
"I'm proud to be up in here with the up-and-coming West Coast hotness. A true mother fucking lyricist," Dre told the crowd. Later, Kendrick was joined onstage by T.I. and the Game, according to Nah Right.

RZA Says the Wu-Tang Clan Could Return in Full Force, But Only if He's in Charge

The New York Times recently spent some time with RZA, who's gearing up to release his directorial debut, the Quentin Tarantino-produced kung-fu film The Man With The Iron Fists. The profile pivoted around the rapper's long-standing love of film and kung-fu rather than his rap career, but the Times has followed up with an interesting addendum about the possible future of the Wu-Tang Clan.
RZA, always a powerful force behind Wu-Tang, explained that he's considered a reunion under a few circumstances. Namely that the group executes their collective day-to-day tasks with organized focus, and that he steers the ship with near-total creative control. And he certainly lacks no confidence in his vision:

There’s one last job Wu-Tang Clan must do. The 20th anniversary [of Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers)] is next year. And we need to, one time, completely, efficiently, properly, professionally represent our brand. One more time. But this time, showing up on time for press and for concerts and studio...
A lot of people don't know this about Wu-Tang, it started from a focused mind. I was given total autonomy to do whatever I want with them... They agreed, to me, to be a dictator for five years. And in those five years, it's considered some of our best work.... I see what happens when a person like me is driving that ship. I think we can do it again. I've been talking to some of the guys, I was like, "Yo, look, I would suggest that you put down everything you know, and trust me one more time."
I would say, if we get one more shot of me being completely trusted as the driver of the ship, I think we could give the world one more record, maybe. And if not that, one more campaign... Anyway, I think there’s one more round for Wu-Tang, if they go proper. But if they don't come proper, for some reason, whether it's my fault, their fault or the world's fault, I’m going to continue creating art and the Wu-Tang saga. If I've got to be the guy that’s living it, I’m going to live it to the end.

According to Perryscope Concerts and Grimes' Twitter accounts, Claire Boucher's scheduled shows in Winnipeg, Calgary, and Saskatoon have been cancelled due to health issues relating to her hearing. Her Vancouver and U.S. dates are still on. She writes: "Hey guys, so sorry 4 the cancelled shows. im having trouble w hearing loss, tinnitus & am trying 2 stay away from loud music 4 a bit -_-".

Following her performance on "Later... With Jools Holland" last night, Sharon Van Etten has shared the video for her Tramp track "Magic Chords". The clip was directed by Rick Alverson, who also directed the Tim Heidecker- and James Murphy-starring film The Comedy. The somber video finds Van Etten in pioneer clothes, surrounded by naked bodies.
In other Van Etten news, she recently collaborated with J Mascis on a John Denver cover for a forthcoming tribute album, and with Rufus Wainwright on a holiday song. She's also on tour right now.

I saw Fiona Apple last Friday and it was best show I've seen in my entire life. Her band was phenomenal. Blake Mills is a great guitarist. I was in the front row center. The cold I got from waiting outside for two hours is so worth it. What was the last concert you went to?
