ok Google to the rescue:

“Kai kai” [rhymes with "eye eye"] refers to when two drag queens engage in sexual activity or “hook up”. The term most likely derives from the American slang term “ki ki” [pronounced "kee kee"], which is a general term used when gay men laugh, giggle or joke around with one another.

So KiKi isn't something the Scissor Sisters made up? I have never heard it, and I am a gay man who laughs, giggles, and jokes around with gay men all the time.

Idk if you're in the drag community at all but that's where the term comes from.

But that KaiKai definition from the comment before this says is a drag queen term that stems from KiKi, which is a gay man term. I don't know the legitimacy of any of this, just going by what I'm reading here.

Idk about that etymology but afaik "kiki" originated specifically in drag-type circles (which, y'know, would generally be comprised of gay men, so this doesn't invalidate the above comment). Wouldn't it make sense for a drag-specific term to evolve from a more general one that started in drag circles?

kiki wasn't from drag though. It's from the gay community, but not specifically drag. It's used in Paris Is Burning from the gay club kids. People are getting confused with KaiKai which is way different.

I didn't mean that it came exclusively from drag queens, more that it came from, like, the spheres of gay culture that include drag queens (which, after all, have never encompassed the whole of the gay community).

kiki has been around forever. lots of the current slang we use now was in Paris is Burning. kiki was also mentioned in Truth or Dare.

The term has been around for ages and ages, but is now just rising to the surface because gay people don;t have to hide in the shadows anymore.

It's all right no need to feel stupid. Kai Kai is a term for drag queen sex, so I guess if you would have used it out loud, you may have had stares :)

Actually, I thought the whole song was alluding to drag queen sex. !! I've only ever said "kai kai" in that context. :) Now I understand there is a whole 'nother term to learn.
