most of the time I don't mind it but there are times when the discrepancy gets really obvious

the real problem is that there's no intermediary word for girls/women the way we have the word "guys" for boys/men--I mean there's the word "gals" but nobody really uses it

The fact that "guys"--which is indeed a male-gendered term--is considered "gender-neutral" should tell people everything they need to know about the gender discrepancies in the colloquial English language.
