Gillian Anderson as Nora? I'm not sure how that'll turn out.

Why?

Because Nora starts out as very submissive and traditional in a way, (even though of course she isn't) and I've never seen Gillian Anderson play anything other than very strong. Of course I have never really seen Anderson in anything other than X-files, so I realize I could easily be wrong about this.

Gillian is like the complete opposite of Scully IRL though, all spacey and whatnot. :) She's a great actress, she can pull it off.

Ah. She's played a similar type of character in the brillant BBC costume miniseries drama "BLEAK HOUSE". Unfortunately, the best clip that I can find is this one that shows multiples scenes: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vyYPxXUUAuA

watch The House of Mirth. what you just said you've never seen her do is exactly what she does. :) she's fantastic!

I read HoM when I was 16 and LOVED it, but when I saw the movie, I wasn't blown away.

I just watched it a couple weekends ago, and now (at 24) I appreciate its subtleness so much more, especially Gillian's acting.

i was pretty ambivalent towards it when i first saw it as well after reading the novel (which i ADORED), but it was gillian anderson and laura linney's performances that brought me back to it. the direction is ghastly, but they save the film imo. especially when lily starts to take her downward spiral, gillian owns it.
