In my outline for a screenplay for Maid in Manhattan 2, he had a change of heart and changed parties before he ran for re-election in 2008 because of the rise of Obama and his dedication (in this case, Chris Marshall's commitment) to environmentalism and the Green economy. While not a wholesale progressive, in his 22 years in the US Senate, Marshall was almost tapped to serve as Biden's Secretary of Energy, but he declined and is instead contemplating a run for President in 2028 while his wife Marisa works as a hotel executive splitting her time between NYC and DC.

Yes, I have thought about this, I like this movie that much and I have no fucking clue why. It's not that good LMAO.

(Oh, and if anyone cares about the overarching plot of my sequel idea, it revolves around Ty but I haven't been able to pin down the specifics about who he falls in love with that causes a wacky romantic shitstorm during the Presidential campaign of Marisa and Chris trying to help Ty win the person of his dreams while not getting into election drama, but

the movie makes me crazy because I feel like the most obvious place for that story to go considering the characterization of the leads is for Ralph Fiennes to realize his heart isn't really in politics and JLo is the one who helps him realize that AND if I'm not mistaken, isn't there a mini-plot thread of her organizing her workplace in some way? (it's been a while since I've seen it) the movie should end with him dropping out and putting his political might behind HER running for his assembly seat. a real modern Cinderella story rather than just a half-baked Pretty Woman!! I'm telling you!
