December 29, 2024 Welp. It's official. The woman who killed Selena, Yolanda Saldívar, has filed for parole and is asking to be released in 2025. She was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole in 30 years for the murder of 23-year-old Selena Quintanilla on October 26, 1995.
Inmates at the prison told the New York Post that Saldívar is constantly a target, which forces her to be housed in protective custody. Marisol Lopez, who served time alongside her from 2017 to 2022, said, "There's a bounty on her head, like everyone wants a piece of her. The guards keep her away from everyone else, because she's hated so much. If she were out, someone would try to take her down."
"Everyone wanted to get justice for Selena. There's a target on her back," another former inmate told the outlet.
A relative of Saldívar claimed that the murderer feels as if she is a “political prisoner” behind bars, and that she believes she has paid her debt to society. “Keeping her in prison isn’t going to do any good,” said her cousin. “It’s time for her to get out.”
Saldívar's parole eligibility date is March 30, 2025.
