This is giving me ick for reasons I can't articulate. I miss the days when celebs had a sort of mystery, and knew the difference between your public persona and what is said amongst friends.
I posted that in the unpopular opinions post that one time - that I hate knowing EVERYTHING about celebs because it ruins the mystery - and people said I was on the wrong site, which I get, but it's still true! I want the fantasy!
This is "in the bar or small gathering amongst friends" or "doing a Dafoeish like interview" where you're asked what motivates you about ~the craft, not social media in response to some shit some random said about a character you played. You don't see Joaquin Phoenix getting this precious over the Joker, you know? This is messy.
this might sound bad but part of the reason why I got into celeb gossip sites was to see speculation about their lives, and now that we know so much it ruins that fun lmaooo nah things are different too. the 4th wall is officially broken and I didn't want to be apart of any of the weirdness that contributed. except for ontd ofc
I remember back in the day - like pre-2010, so when I was still in college - there would be fun with ridiculous speculation about things, who was dating who, secret love triangles, whatever. Yes, it was bad, but there was a fanfic element to it. Now you can go on Wikipedia and know the names of ex-wives, where they live, the names of their parents and childhood pet fish, their entire dating history, and in the case of Ralph Fiennes, a large section devoted to him getting a Qantas flight attendant fired by having sex with her in a lavatory over the Indian Ocean. IDEK why I remember that part...
It's almost shocking when the personal lives section for a celeb is blank, and then even more shocking when it's obvious either the celeb themselves or someone in their family is writing the personal life section (especially when it gets waaaaay too specific in a way that is just weird). For living people, too. I found one actor (D-list, mind you) where their personal life section was so specific I was able to find their actual address really

I think social media has broken the celeb mystique. Yes, logically we acknowledge that they are real people with good takes and bad takes on things. But with celebs there should be a bit of mystery because speculating is fun.
I agree! I think the whole talking to them directly about the speculation completely ruined it lol once celebs starting get involved with stan culture, it was done. then corporate media got ahold of it and now its overcooked, burnt, to a crisp.
I mean, look at how public opinion on celebs changes now because we know too much about them and we are now so close to them via social media and constant interviews. Beyond Blake's fall due to her press, Cynthia Erivo shot herself in the foot with fans over complaining about the poster edit. I know it sucks and you want to express yourself and engage when you feel attacked, but as a public persona, the press you get from that is terrible.
