I think they wanted to tie into the new "land" in Universal Studios because a big section of it is HTTYD-themed.

Unpopular opinion for sure but I did not like this movie. The dragons were very cute and the comic-relief kids were good, but all the main characters annoyed me. The whole "strained relationship between alpha-male dad and misfit son" plot has been done to death, and the romance plot was also dull and predictable. Yeah yeah I know it's a kid's movie.
