November 17, 2024 Red One, the Dwayne Johnson and Chris Evans-starring holiday film with a gigantic budget of $250 million, took the number one spot at the box office this weekend with a $34.1 million opening. Amazon MGM is likely convinced that its real value lies in streaming, but its relatively paltry take is surely somewhat disappointing.
Venom: The Last Dance came in second place with a $7.3 take in its fourth weekend, trailing behind its two predecessors in earnings, but still doing reasonably well overall thanks to a moderate budget.
The Best Christmas Pageant Ever scored $5.4 million, while Heretic pulled in $5.16 million in its second weekend. The latter has already made $20 million on a $10 million budget, showing once again that horror is a pretty reilable genre for box office success.
In fifth place is The Wild Robot, still alive and kicking in its eighth weekend with $4.3 million.
Coming up next week are some major new releases: Gladiator II, which has already pulled in over $87 million overseas, and Wicked, whose first weekend sales show signs of an enormous hit.
