saw the movie. was surprised it was a musical. i didn’t know!
saldaña was definitely the lead despite the title of the movie. her character was the main plot driver! so, i hope the academy corrects this category fraud.
gomez’s spanish was cringe. like they couldn’t afford her an accent coach?
and i did not know gascón was in nosotros los nobles. i’m very happy her. she was great in the movie. she should vie for supporting actress, but i don’t know how competitive that category is.
Genuine question here re accent. Is her Spanish like a non-American trying to speak English but has an accent? I don’t get why people harp on it so much because if a Mexican character spoke English with an accent in a movie I wouldn’t think much of it.
the story is set in mexico, so i’m expecting mexican spanish from everyone. even zoe saldaña’s character is explained as a dominican born but raised in mexico to i guess support her looks and maybe uneven mexican spanish. but she did a great job.
i might have missed an explanation for jessi del monte, selena’s character’s bio but i was expecting her to sound native to mexico. but obvs, she sounded like a dominant english speaker speaking fluent spanish. or i just know how she sounds like in english and she sounds the exact same in spanish. 🤷🏽♂️
even edgar ramirez who’s venezuelan was all in using mexican slang. lol.
I hope this makes sense. But her acting here doesn't sound like a non native speaker tackling another language comfortably with an accent. It very much sounds like someone who learned lines phonetically in a different language. Like when I enjoy a Japanese song and memorize + sign out the lyrics to it but don't actually know or understand a lick of Japanese.
This makes sense. I don’t speak Spanish so genuinely didn’t understand how she sounds. She did seem awkward in some scenes. I liked her and Karla together and thought she did well with the ending, though.
