I've been in my LOTR era lately. Not just because I believe that some Uruk Hai are oddly sexy but also just because it's a good story. So I bought the original trilogy as the extended boxset and I've been having a blast looking at all the extra footage. I'm on the second movie now, but still busy with all the additional stuff.

Also, just really impressive how much commitment, effort and attention to detail went into everything.

The story is so pretty and compelling. I love the movies, I adore the serie Rings of Power and I'm going to read the Silmarilion soon (I read lotr before and it was fastidious but I feel like now is a good time to get back to Tolkien). His emphasis on pity and goodness just speaks to me more now. Probably because of the times we are living. There's an echo.

It's not perfect and like Star Wars, I'm very weary of the supremacists/assholes in the fandom. Still, the message is beautiful and if some morons can't get it, it's their fault only.

This should probably get a more thorough response but it’s late here and I just got back from work so the gist is that there’s some folk who think the story is about how the West is superior to everyone else but they are ignorant and not aware of the fact that Tolkien personally hated Hitler. This isn’t to say that there aren’t racist elements in his story (it’s a product of its time after all) but yeah. Like many great works of literature, it can be read as “supporting” several different philosophies/world views. And that brings us to the whole allegory vs applicability things (Tolkien famously HATED allegories). Anyway I don’t know if this reply makes any sense, let me know if you want to know more and I will be happy to get back to you!

I love it as well, for how much I know of it at least! I watched the movies all the way back then but wasn't at the right time to delve deeply into the incredibly amount of detail attached to his universe yet. Now I feel like I am ready to obsess over it and add it to my pile of things I love.

And I think the story always stays relevant, but at times like this we can indeed get a lot out of it so I'm really excited to delve into it more. I spend some time here and there on the LOTR subreddit and it seems alright most of the time but I know at some point bullshit will rear its head...

I remember getting the extended box sets one Christmas and watching all the additional stuff over the holidays. It was a magical time.
