I quit years ago. I hated how angry and annoyed it made me feel every time I looked at it.

I started on Threads when it first came out but lasted a few weeks and realised it was the same shit, different haircut. People are just so dramatic over the stupidest shit.

I signed up for Bluesky but I don’t think I will use it for same reasons above. I stopped reading news apps so I don’t want to be reading them by proxy and then be mad all the time about shit out of my control, nor do I want to hear every knitter’s hot take about test knitting or free patterns or whatever that week’s craft drama is.

It’s becoming harder and harder to use any social media in a “harmless” way. Too much misinformation and disinformation being spread and the algorithms feel like they are geared toward showing users ragebait or clickbait.

Yeah, even with Instagram - the only one I have now - I just want to look at cats and crafts but lately when I’m scrolling through reels I’m getting a lot of political stuff. I mark them as not interested but they just keep coming up. It’s a pain in the arse.

I only look at the reels that appear mid-feed, and I don't scroll beyond them (I think it's usually 4-6ish), but I've been able to train the algorithm by refusing to open anything other than cat content lol. I've even gotten it to focus mostly on kittens by engaging more with those videos. If I feel like it's veering too far off even in terms of cat content (eg, if it's showing me more older cats and not enough kittens), I retrain it by completely ignoring anything other than exactly what I want to see.

I don't use the interested/not interested buttons, though. Annoying that Instagram seems to just ignore them!

re: ragebait/clickbait

yeah, ive had to turn off getting news alerts firs thing in the morning bc ill read a headline and immediately feel myself getting mad. thats not how i want to start my day, bc it always ends up impacting what i do for the rest of that day. its not worth my inner peace anymore tbh

I'm on threads and the algorithm has been awesome this week. Not a single post from MAGA people on my feed. Just feminine rage. I followed Stephen King there too.

Nice! That’s good training of the algorithm.

Yeah I am chronically online, I know this and I should probably go take a walk, see what grass is, etc.

But the amount of groups (especially fandom) I've seen implode over the stupidest shit... Maybe I'm just a doormat or something but I'll just be sitting there like "Is this really worth you going apeshit over?"

Threads was just annoying to me like it only showed me people showing off recipes of their debts or bank accounts for some reason???? Or people acting dumb just to get a lot of engagement with things like "I am in EUROPE and there isn't any water ...“ which 100% triggers the "Europe isn't a country" people

It just seemed to me like a lot of people complaining about how there was little engagement, but then not engaging with anyone, and then other people complaining about how the people complaining about there being no engagement were not engaging. Exhausting.

I was on it pretty early, so I assume it’s gotten better, but I still don’t want to scroll through everyone moaning about everything. I do enough moaning of my own.
