I wasn’t the biggest fan of The Substance. I’m not a fan in general of its path towards the end I guess? idk but I thought she was amazing in it

IA about the end. Maybe I need to rewatch, but the time jump was confusing and then it basically turned into Repo the Genetic Opera

It's not a very good film, and honestly I understand that it's fantastical and all, but I honestly can't see how an aerobics show on daytime was a ratings hit in that world. And I also think it undermines Demi as an actress because there's so much commentary there about her career related to her body (Striptease, Indecent Proposal, Disclosure) but the director is uninterested in that layer.

Love the memes tho! But it's also Mubi trying to do an A24, marketing is substance

I also felt that it was aiming for an A24 feel. I will never watch it again, it is a gross and bad movie. It's a case of "bad movie, excellent performances" for me.

It’s interesting that you mention the commentary, because I feel like Demi was specifically chosen because of her career history and I feel like her presence automatically makes it meta.

Tbh the (lack of) realism didn't really bother me, I mean this is set in a world where it snows in LA

The Jane Fonda workout tapes (what this movie references) sold like crazy in the direct to home market, they would have been extremely popular if they had aired on TV instead.
