As one of the cover stars for Vanity Fair's Hollywood issue, Nicole Kidman was also interviewed by them. Her viral AFI tribute where she listed every director she's worked with came up, and she was asked which directors she'd like to work with on a movie.

"I've always said I want to work with Scorsese, if he ( Read more... )

i remember him once explicitly saying that he knew he wasn't capable of writing women properly so he just didn't (or something along those lines), and i always thought that was better than doing what nolan does, but every time a post like this pops up i try to find the quote and i never do so i'm starting to think i made it up lmao

but anyways while she is 100% right, i feel like this would be more meaningful coming from some like kirsten dunst who actively seeks to work with women and like half of her movies have been directed by women as oppose to nicole who's worked with like 5 female directors in the span of 30 years lol

I found this from 2019 when he did an Italian press conference for The Irishman when he got asked about female characters in his movies. Though it's more him refuting the idea that his movies don't have female leads and also saying that he's so old now and doesn't have the time

I do think that at least I've enjoyed more of the supporting women in Scorsese's movies compared to Nolan as you said lol.

I think Kidman's trying to be better about it now. At least when it comes to all the tv she's been doing.

I mean, that's why writers exist.

And half of his films have been written by other people so I don't know why that would be an issue. He just doesn't want to.

I'm so tired of men treating women like we're some mysterious alien creatures. We're half the population! And we're not particularly different from men other than having slightly different experiences. It seems like he feels that women aren't capable of the kind of bad behavior and violence he likes his characters to take part in, but we definitely are.

your comment made me realize he’s seriously shooting himself in the foot by not taking on the challenge (lol) of making a female-centric story. a film about a bunch of flawed, complex women directed by Scorsese sounds incredible.

Sharon Stone was on a Kelly Ripa podcast last year saying that she's pitched several female-led projects to him, but though she loves him, she thinks that in his very male driven view of the world that they don't appreciate dominating women and want them in supportive roles. Sad indeed.

and women write men all the time, actually; so it's not like it's that hard to go across gender here.

We're just too intimidating to men because we're better than them.

For real: it's such a stupid excuse. We are people???

Nicole has worked with 15 female directors since 2017. She made a point of realising she wasn't doing enough for women filmmakers and has put her money where her mouth is.
